The statement is personal, not a definition that applies to every performer: Sastry made it while discussing their identity and how they hope to explain their public persona to their child.
What Sastry means by drag
In a Scroll interview with Sharif Rangnekar, published September 15, 2024, Sastry describes drag as a flexible artistic canvas rather than an art with a fixed rulebook. “The reason why I choose drag is because of the canvas it gives an artist to explore, the freeness, no rulebook autonomy is what resonates with me,” they said. Sastry connects their practice with spirituality, sexuality, sensuality, cultural identity, and musicality. They also make a distinction between gender expression and sexual orientation: “My drag is not an extension to my sexuality, it’s a manifestation of my gender.” That is how Sastry understands their own work, not a rule about what drag means to other artists or what their identities must be.
From classical dance to a first drag show
Sastry says they trained in Indian classical dance for 12 years. They found that the gender and caste politics they encountered in that milieu did not resonate with them. During a visit to Bengaluru for Pride, they encountered drag, an experience that helped open a different artistic path.

According to Sastry’s account in the 2024 interview, they held their first drag show at a friend’s café in Hyderabad on June 9, 2019. They expected 21 people; more than 200 attended. Those are recollections reported by Sastry, not independently audited attendance figures.
Visibility, parenting, and the values they hope to share
The interview places Sastry’s reflections on drag in the context of parenting. They want their child to learn love, empathy, self-expression, and respect for difference. For Sastry, being visible as a drag artist is one way of expressing those values and imagining a more accepting future for their child.

They also voice concern about stigma, prejudice, and the possibility that their child could face bullying because of their queerness and public role. Sastry describes visibility as meaningful despite those fears: “Yet I believe that by continuing to be visible and outspoken, I can help create a world where my child, and others like them, can thrive without fear.” This is their hope and concern as a parent; the interview does not establish outcomes for queer families generally.
Identity is not a single story
Sastry identifies as non-binary and bisexual, and discusses being perceived as straight because they are married to a woman. They also describe limited representation, in their view, of bisexual people assigned male at birth. These are Sastry’s observations and experiences, not quantified findings about the wider community.

That distinction matters to the interview’s central idea. Sastry’s account shows how drag can hold artistic practice, gender expression, cultural identity, and personal values together for one performer. It does not require every drag artist to approach the form in the same way—or to use it as activism.

“Drag, for me, is not just an art form but a way to challenge societal norms and celebrate diversity,” Sastry says. The words “for me” are essential: they frame the statement as a personal account. In this conversation, challenging norms is connected not only to performance, but to the possibility of raising a child who can value empathy and difference while living openly as a queer parent.

The interview offers one person’s perspective, not a survey of performers or a history of drag. Its value lies in how clearly Sastry describes what the art form makes possible for them: creative autonomy, a way to express gender, and a visible invitation to imagine a less restrictive world.
