Donny Osmond says Michael Jackson once told him to change his name if he wanted to return to the charts. Osmond later found the blunt advice painful—but came to see a New York radio station’s reluctance to identify him as evidence that Jackson had understood the stigma attached to his name.
What advice did Michael Jackson give Donny Osmond?
In a clip from a 2023 appearance on The Adam Carolla Show, Osmond recalled asking Jackson around 1983 how he could get back on the charts. According to Osmond, Jackson answered: “Your name’s poison, Donny. You gotta change your name.” Parade and Just Jared reported the recollection.

The line is not a contemporaneous recording or an independently verified transcript of Jackson’s words. It is Osmond’s later account of their conversation, so the quote should be understood as his recollection.
Why did Osmond call the advice offensive?
Osmond said the comment was “very offensive” and “tough to hear.” He described a period when “the name Donny Osmond was a joke,” and said listeners could be mocked for liking his music. Jackson’s suggestion therefore hit at more than a stage name: it reflected the burden Osmond believed his public image had become as he tried to revive his chart career. TV Insider also reported his account of the name’s stigma.

How did “Soldier of Love” support Jackson’s point?
Osmond connected Jackson’s advice to the way New York radio station WPLJ treated “Soldier of Love.” He recalled that station staff liked the song and played it as an import, but initially did not want to identify him as the singer. In Osmond’s telling, the track—and other music—received airplay before stations revealed who was behind it. That experience later made Jackson’s blunt assessment seem more credible to him: the music could get a hearing when the name did not lead the way.
Complex reported that “Soldier of Love” later reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. That chart position is Complex’s reported figure.
