We know what preceded Donald Trump’s “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” post; we do not know what result he expected. The September 15, 2024 Truth Social post gave no reason. It came five days after Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, but timing is context—not proof of Trump’s motive.

What did Trump expect?

The post itself offers no explanation, argument, or stated goal. The archived text is simply “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” and contemporaneous reporting supplied no further account of what Trump hoped would happen. Any suggestion that he meant to signal to supporters, express displeasure, or attract attention is interpretation, not a reported fact.

The timing makes Swift’s endorsement relevant: Trump posted five days after she announced her support for Harris and Walz. He had also reportedly said Swift might “pay a price … in the marketplace” for her political position. Those facts make a connection plausible, but they do not establish why he posted or what outcome he wanted. Trump’s Truth archive; Axios.

What happened before the post?

  • August 2024: Trump shared AI-generated images on Truth Social that falsely suggested Swift and some of her fans supported him. In response to false images and claims, he wrote, “I accept!” The Guardian.
  • September 10: After the presidential debate, Swift said she would vote for Harris and Walz. She called Harris “a steady-handed, gifted leader” and said she believed the country could accomplish more under “calm and not chaos.” Swift also said the falsely attributed AI images had raised her concerns about AI and misinformation and led her to state her actual plans clearly. Swift’s Instagram statement.
  • September 11: Axios reported Trump said Swift would “probably pay a price … in the marketplace” for her political position and that he preferred Brittany Mahomes. Axios.
  • September 15: At 10:44 a.m. EDT, Trump posted “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” on Truth Social. The archived post has no accompanying explanation. Trump’s Truth archive.

What the post does—and does not—establish

It establishes that Trump publicly expressed hostility toward Swift. By itself, it does not establish a policy argument, a plan to counter her influence, an expectation of backlash, or a particular electoral aim. The earlier marketplace remark is relevant context, not evidence of the later post’s intended effect.

How the campaign responded—and what backlash claims got wrong

The Harris-Walz campaign answered with “Trump’s Bad Week (Taylor’s Version),” a humorous statement built around Swift song-title references. The Guardian.

Claims that Swift’s political endorsement caused tour dates to be canceled or ended her Coca-Cola partnership were false or misrepresented. FactCheck.org reported that the cancellation story originated on a site labeled as satire, that Swift’s remaining listed U.S. dates were sold out when it reported, and that Coca-Cola said the partnership claim was false.
