During a White House press briefing on January 20, 2026, Donald Trump removed a binder clip from a stack of papers he called a “book of accomplishments” and joked that he was glad his finger had not been caught in it. The official transcript records a near-miss joke, not an injury.
What happened during the press briefing?
As he presented the papers to reporters, Trump removed the binder clip holding them together. He looked at the clip and said, “Ooh, I’m glad my finger wasn’t in that sucker. That could have done some damage.” The transcript records laughter after both remarks.
He continued: “I wouldn’t have shown the pain,” then joked, “I would have acted like nothing happened as my finger fell off.” The transcript also records him pointing toward a reporter after saying that someone had done it. These details are in the official Government Publishing Office transcript.
Was Trump’s finger actually caught or injured?
The transcript says he was glad his finger was not in the clip. It does not report that the clip caught or injured him; the comments about pain and a finger falling off were part of his joke.
