His official biography describes years of training, point-fighting experience, full-contact knockdown competition and major tournament titles before his acting career. That record is separate from the fight choreography seen in his films, which should not be treated as documentary evidence of a particular technique or rank.
What martial arts did Dolph Lundgren train?
Lundgren’s own karate biography describes a progression through three related but distinct stages:
- Judo: He began at age 16 while playing ice hockey in Sweden.
- Goju-ryu karate: About a year after starting judo, he switched to karate and initially trained in Goju-ryu.
- Kyokushin karate: He later moved to Kyokushinkai, the full-contact style that became the central discipline of his competitive career.
This sequence matters because “Dolph Lundgren trained in karate” is accurate but incomplete. His account is not a claim that he mastered every martial art shown in his movies; it is a specific story of judo, an early Goju-ryu period and sustained Kyokushin training.
On the official karate page, Lundgren describes Kyokushinkai as the more powerful style associated with Mas Oyama. He says he trained through high school and, after returning to Stockholm, met instructor Brian Fitkin, who became an important figure in his development.

When did Lundgren start martial arts?
Judo at 16
Lundgren says he started judo at 16. The setting was Sweden, where he was also playing ice hockey. Judo gave him an initial grounding in throws, grips, balance and controlled sparring before he changed direction toward karate.
Karate about a year later
Approximately a year after beginning judo, he switched to karate. His first karate experience was in Goju-ryu, a traditional Okinawan-derived style known for close-range work, conditioning and a mixture of hard and soft techniques. He subsequently moved to Kyokushinkai, which placed greater emphasis on demanding physical conditioning and full-contact knockdown competition.
Point fighting at 19
The official account says Lundgren began competing in point fighting at 19. Point fighting and Kyokushin knockdown are not interchangeable rulesets: point matches stop or score exchanges under their own conventions, while knockdown competition tests continuous, heavy-contact striking with different targets and tactical demands. His timeline therefore shows a change in competition experience, not two names for the same event.
Was Dolph Lundgren a competitive karateka?
Yes. His official biography presents him as a competitive Kyokushin karateka rather than someone whose only martial-arts experience came from film sets. However, the individual results should be attributed to that first-party biography. The available account is not an independently audited tournament record.

1979 World Open in Tokyo
While serving in the Swedish Marine Corps, Lundgren says he was selected in 1979 to fight at the second World Open Karate Tournament in Tokyo. His official page describes the event as one of the early international full-contact tournaments. This is the milestone that most clearly places his training in a serious international competition context.
British Open titles in 1980 and 1981
According to his official biography, Lundgren won the British Open Knockdown Heavyweight title in both 1980 and 1981. “Heavyweight” identifies the division, while “knockdown” identifies the full-contact format; these were not point-fighting titles.
Australian Open success in 1982
The same account reports that he won the Australian Open individual and team championships in 1982. The page does not provide a complete tournament ledger, brackets or independent statistical verification, so these should be read as biographical claims rather than as a substitute for an archival competition database.
| Year or age | Milestone | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | Started judo in Sweden | His first documented martial art |
| About 17 | Switched to karate; began with Goju-ryu | Early karate phase before Kyokushin |
| 19 | Began point fighting | Competition experience under point rules |
| 1979 | Fought at the World Open in Tokyo while in the Swedish Marine Corps | International full-contact competition, as reported by his official biography |
| 1980 and 1981 | British Open Knockdown Heavyweight titles | Reported Kyokushin knockdown achievements |
| 1982 | Australian Open individual and team championships | Reported tournament wins in Australia |
| 1998 | Passed a third-dan examination, according to his official biography | Later rank reporting conflicts with another profile |
How did his Kyokushin training develop?
Training with Brian Fitkin in Stockholm
After returning to Stockholm, Lundgren met Brian Fitkin and continued developing under his instruction. Fitkin is also associated with Lundgren’s later film conditioning and fight coordination, which helps explain the continuity between his competition background and his screen preparation without treating the two as identical activities.

Training in Japan with Mas Oyama
After studying in Australia, Lundgren’s official page says he trained in Tokyo with Mas Oyama, the founder associated with Kyokushinkai. The account places this training within his broader effort to deepen his knowledge of the style and prepare for high-level competition.
Training in New York
The biography also says he trained in New York with Tadashi Nakamura and Shigeru Oyama. These periods show that his development was not confined to one local club: his account describes instruction and practice in Sweden, Australia, Japan and the United States.
Planned World Tournament preparation
Lundgren’s official biography describes an intensive preparation routine for a planned World Tournament. It then says he turned toward acting and did not pursue that tournament. The important distinction is that the preparation is described as part of a serious athletic plan, while the event itself was not completed as a later competitive milestone in the account.

- His official biography says he returned to his Stockholm dojo in 1998, passed a demanding promotion examination and received third dan.
- A Black Belt Magazine profile describes him as fourth dan, but the available profile does not establish when, where or under whose authority that promotion occurred.
- A Mentor Foundation USA profile also describes him as third dan without giving a dated promotion account.
Accordingly, it is not responsible to present a single current rank as settled fact. The precise formulation is: the official biography records a third-dan examination in 1998, while a later magazine profile calls him fourth dan. The evidence available here does not resolve whether a subsequent promotion took place, or which organization’s grading authority should govern the discrepancy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between his martial arts and his movie fights?
Competition is evidence of a ruleset, not every screen technique
His documented competition history supports the conclusion that he trained and fought in karate under point and knockdown rules. It does not prove that every kick, throw or combination performed by a character on screen came from Kyokushin, judo or Lundgren’s personal practice.
Film choreography serves the story
Movie fights are designed around camera position, pacing, character identity, safety and dramatic clarity. They may combine rehearsed choreography, stunt work, editing and techniques from several combat traditions. Even when Lundgren helps coordinate or condition for a fight, the finished sequence remains a constructed performance rather than a competition bout.
His background still matters to his screen presence
Real karate training can contribute to stance, balance, impact control, conditioning and an understanding of distance. It also gives an actor practical familiarity with contact and rehearsal. Those advantages help explain why Lundgren’s action roles can look physically credible, but they should not be used to infer an unverified rank or a complete technical inventory.

How does Lundgren describe karate’s influence?
The official karate page attributes this reflection to Lundgren: “Karate has been so important to me, it is almost impossible to imagine myself and my life without it.” The page does not identify an original interview or date for the quotation, so it is best treated as a statement reproduced by his official site rather than assigned to a specific occasion.
The same page attributes another personal explanation to him: “It was through martial arts that I confronted my insecurities, gained inner strength, broke through my own self-fabricated barriers and came into my own as a man.” These words present karate as a long-term influence on confidence and identity, not merely a way to prepare for action roles.
What can and cannot be verified from the published accounts?
What the accounts establish
- A first-party timeline from judo at 16 to karate about a year later.
- An early Goju-ryu period followed by Kyokushinkai training.
- Point-fighting competition beginning at 19.
- Reported participation in the 1979 Tokyo World Open.
- Reported British Open Knockdown Heavyweight titles in 1980 and 1981.
- Reported Australian Open individual and team championships in 1982.
- Training described in Sweden, Australia, Japan and the United States.
- A third-dan examination recorded in 1998 by the official biography.
What remains unsettled
- The complete independent tournament record for every result in the official biography.
- The date and authority of the fourth-dan rank reported by Black Belt Magazine.
- Any claim that his present rank is definitively third or fourth dan.
- The idea that film choreography is a reliable record of his personal martial-arts technique.
What should a viewer remember?
Lundgren was not simply cast as a martial artist and then trained for the camera. His documented path began with judo, moved through Goju-ryu and became primarily Kyokushin karate, with reported international knockdown competition and major titles before acting took priority. At the same time, the evidence should be stated carefully: the competition milestones come chiefly from his own official biography, and his published rank is inconsistent. The strongest accurate description is therefore “an experienced Kyokushin karate competitor with an earlier judo and Goju-ryu background,” not an unqualified claim about a current dan grade or every technique seen in his films.
