Dolly Parton Says She’s Doing “Better Than I Thought” After Carl Dean’s Death

Yes—Dolly Parton says she is doing “better than I thought I would” since her husband, Carl Dean, died. She was describing how she is functioning through grief, not saying the grief is over: she still misses Dean, feels lonely and is relearning routines after nearly six decades of marriage.

What Dolly Parton means by “better”

Parton’s March 2025 update was carefully qualified. She said she had been with Dean for 60 years and would have to “relearn some of the things that we’ve done,” while promising to keep him close. Her wording points to adaptation to daily life without him, not a clinical assessment or a claim that she has finished grieving.

At Dollywood’s season opening that month, Parton said she had been “crying enough” and needed laughter and fun. The comment showed her using activity and shared enjoyment to get through an especially difficult early period.

Carl Dean’s death and their marriage

Dean died in Nashville on March 3, 2025, at age 82. Parton and Dean met outside a laundromat in 1964, when she was 18 and he was 21, and married on Memorial Day in 1966. Their marriage lasted nearly 60 years.

Parton has said Dean had been ill. She feels some peace that he is no longer suffering, but that relief exists alongside the pain of losing her husband and the loneliness of changing a life built around two people.

How Parton says she is coping

Faith

In an Associated Press interview published May 28, 2025, Parton said she is a person of faith and believes she will see Dean again. For her, faith provides a future hope without erasing the present absence.

Memories and his continuing presence

Parton said she sees Dean every day “in my memories and in my heart,” as well as in the things they did and built together. She also said she really feels his presence and is trying to continue because she knows she has to.

Work and purposeful activity

Continuing projects give Parton structure while she adjusts. She has described Dean as proud of her and supportive of her work, making those commitments part of how she carries their shared history forward.

These statements should not be read as a straight recovery scale. “Better” is Parton’s description of her ability to keep going at a particular time; grief can remain painful even as routines, faith and work become more manageable.

Parton’s projects after Dean’s death

In the May 2025 AP interview, Parton discussed several plans. Their exact release or availability details can change, but they show the kinds of commitments she is choosing to pursue:

  • Star of the Show: a book identified in the interview as one of her upcoming projects.
  • Dolly: An Original Musical: a life-story musical in development.
  • Dollywood’s 40th anniversary programming: events connected with the theme park’s 40th anniversary.

Parton’s decision to keep working does not contradict her grief. It reflects the routine, relationships and creative purpose she has said help her move through it.
