Does the Mageborn Series Get Better After the First Book?

Goodreads averages trend upward across Mageborn’s five books, but readers disagree about whether the series improves. If Book 1’s premise still interests you, Book 2 is a reasonable trial—not a guarantee.

Sometimes, according to readers—but there is no consensus that Mageborn steadily improves. Goodreads’ displayed average ratings rise from 3.92 for the first book to 4.29 for the fifth, while reader discussions include both praise for improvement and complaints about the early books, characterization, and ending. If you still care about Mordecai’s story after Book 1, trying Book 2 is reasonable; if the first book’s style or characters are already a deal-breaker, stopping is too.

What the Mageborn series is

Michael G. Manning’s official series page describes Mageborn as the series that began his setting. Mordecai starts as a blacksmith’s son, discovers a magical birthright, and becomes entangled in a plot against the Duke of Lancaster and the Kingdom of Lothion. The sequence is complete at five books:

  1. The Blacksmith’s Son
  2. The Line of Illeniel
  3. The Archmage Unbound
  4. The God-Stone War
  5. The Final Redemption

What the ratings suggest—and what they cannot prove

In the Goodreads series-page snapshot surfaced in 2026, the displayed averages increase with each installment. The figures are live reader aggregates and can change; they are not a controlled comparison or proof that the books objectively improve.

Book Displayed Goodreads average Ratings counted in the snapshot
The Blacksmith’s Son 3.92 13,847
The Line of Illeniel 4.11 10,294
The Archmage Unbound 4.21 9,479
The God-Stone War 4.25 7,283
The Final Redemption 4.29 6,098

Those scores are Goodreads platform aggregates in the accessed 2026 search snapshot; Goodreads does not give a publication year for the surfaced totals. The upward pattern is a useful sign that later books appeal to many readers who rate them, but the rating counts also decline across the sequence. The numbers alone cannot tell you whether the changes will suit your taste, or whether readers who stopped early would have rated the later books differently.

Reader reactions are mixed

A July 2021 discussion on r/ProgressionFantasy asked whether the series gets better after Book 1. One respondent said it improves but still had issues with the first three books; another called the five-book run mediocre. These are individual reactions, not a representative poll.

A May 2026 thread on r/Fantasy also included criticism of characterization and the ending. That does not establish a universal verdict, but it shows why a rising aggregate score should not be treated as a guarantee: readers can remain dissatisfied with particular elements even if later books score better overall.

Should you continue with Book 2?

Use your response to the first book as the deciding factor. The case for continuing is strongest if Mordecai’s story, the magic, and the political conflict still interest you, even if Book 1 has rough patches. Book 2, The Line of Illeniel, is a sensible trial rather than a promise that the series will fix what bothered you.

  • Consider continuing if you want to see where the premise goes and are comfortable judging the series one book at a time.
  • Consider stopping if the characterization or the way the story is told is already undermining your enjoyment. The available reader reactions do not support an assurance that those concerns disappear.

What order should you read the books in?

Read Mageborn in publication order: The Blacksmith’s Son, The Line of Illeniel, The Archmage Unbound, The God-Stone War, then The Final Redemption. In a Goodreads author Q&A about reading order, Manning said he prefers publication order for the connected universe because each book contains hints about the past and future that can add context to the others. He also said Mageborn can be read independently.
