Todd McFarlane created the character. Image’s publishing model also makes creator ownership relevant: the company says creator-owned work remains wholly owned by its original creator, while Image promotes and distributes the titles it publishes.
Who publishes Spawn?
Image Comics lists Spawn among the titles it publishes. Its FAQ describes Image’s role as promoting and distributing creator-owned work. That makes Image the answer to the publisher question; the official sources cited here do not identify Spawn as a DC or Marvel title.

Who created Spawn, and what does “creator-owned” mean?
Todd McFarlane created Spawn. In a 2019 announcement, Image identified him as the character’s creator and quoted him saying he remained “100% in the creative driver’s seat” of the character he brought to life in 1992. Image’s FAQ defines creator-owned work as work whose trademark and copyright are wholly owned by its original creator; it says Image promotes and distributes the titles it publishes.

Together, these sources support describing Spawn as an Image-published, McFarlane-created comic in Image’s creator-owned publishing model. They are not a Spawn-specific trademark record or a complete legal analysis of every right connected with the character. The publisher, creator, and rights relationship are related but distinct questions.
Do references or crossovers make Spawn part of DC or Marvel?
No. A character reference or crossover does not, by itself, change a comic’s home publisher. The question of whether Spawn appears alongside characters from another company is separate from who publishes the Spawn series. The official sources cited here identify Image as the publisher; they do not establish a detailed account of every crossover or adaptation right.
How did Spawn begin?
Image’s June 19, 2019 announcement says the inaugural issue was released in 1992 and launched to sales of 1.7 million copies. That figure is Image’s reported launch-sales figure in the 2019 release, not an independently audited count.

If you are looking for a collected edition rather than individual issues, Image says collected editions are available through Amazon in the United States and Canada. One example is Spawn: Hell on Earth, a 304-page trade paperback published by Image Comics, ISBN 9781534304468, as listed by Simon & Schuster. Check the volume or included issues against the point in the series you want to read.
