Enola Holmes is a later character created by Nancy Springer, who imagines her as Sherlock and Mycroft’s younger sister in a separate series of books. Netflix adapted that premise for its films, but the adaptation does not make Enola part of Doyle’s original stories.
Does Enola appear in the original Sherlock Holmes stories?
No. Enola is not a character in Doyle’s original Holmes canon. A HubSpot-hosted educational handout describes Mycroft as Sherlock’s only sibling in those stories and distinguishes Enola from Doyle’s characters: Who Is Enola Holmes?. That answer applies to Doyle’s original stories and novels, not every later book or adaptation featuring Holmes.
Who created Enola Holmes?
Author Nancy Springer created Enola for The Enola Holmes Mysteries, a six-book series. Netflix’s 2020 announcement says the series began with The Case of the Missing Marquess in 2006; the publisher, Penguin Random House, identifies Springer as the author and lists the books in a collected edition.
The six titles are:
- The Case of the Missing Marquess
- The Case of the Left-Handed Lady
- The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets
- The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan
- The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline
- The Case of the Gypsy Good-bye
Penguin Random House lists a collected ebook edition dated September 8, 2020, with ISBN 9780593352359 and 1,232 pages. See the publisher’s catalog listing for that edition.

Why do people associate Enola with Sherlock?
Springer’s books make Enola Sherlock’s sister within their own story world, and Netflix carries that relationship into its adaptation. Netflix’s April 21, 2020 announcement described its film this way: “ENOLA HOLMES tells the story of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ rebellious teen sister Enola, a gifted super-sleuth in her own right who often outsmarts her brilliant siblings.” That is a synopsis of Netflix’s film, not a claim about Doyle’s original stories.
Netflix identifies the film as based on Springer’s book series. Its film information describes the adaptation’s 1884 setting. The premise therefore belongs to Springer’s and Netflix’s versions of the Holmes world, rather than to Doyle’s original canon.
