No. On Windows 10 and 11, Netflix lists Firefox and Opera for playback up to 1080p, while Chrome and Microsoft Edge are listed for up to 4K. The browser’s listed maximum is only a ceiling, though—not a promise that every title or session will stream at that resolution. The answer also changes on macOS and Linux.
Netflix browser limits on Windows
Netflix’s current browser and system requirements list these minimum browser versions and maximum resolutions for Windows 10 or 11:

So Edge is not required for Full HD on Windows. Chrome is not currently limited to 720p in Netflix’s Windows compatibility table, either. Browser requirements can change; these versions and limits are those Netflix lists at the time of publication.

Why the Microsoft-browser claim persists
Older guidance and discussions often described Chrome and Firefox on Windows as capped at 720p. That may reflect past limitations, but it is not a safe description of Netflix’s current listed Windows support. Netflix’s live compatibility table now lists Chrome up to 4K and Firefox up to 1080p on Windows. Avoid applying an old browser limit to a current setup without checking the operating system and Netflix’s latest requirements.
The operating system changes the answer
Netflix’s limits are not the same across every computer. The same browser may have a different maximum on Windows, macOS, or Linux:

For the listed macOS versions, Netflix specifies Safari 14 or later for up to 4K, with Safari 14 requiring macOS 11 or later. Netflix lists Safari 15 or later for live events. On Linux, Netflix says playback is not guaranteed because configurations vary and customer service cannot troubleshoot Linux devices. “PC” can obscure these differences: Windows, Mac, and Linux computers do not share one resolution rule. Netflix lists Chrome on compatible Chromebooks separately, with support up to 4K; check the current requirements for that device category rather than assuming Linux rules apply.
What it takes to get 4K on a Windows computer
Choosing Edge or Chrome is only one part of Ultra HD playback. Netflix’s Windows computer guidance says 4K requires a plan that supports Ultra HD, playback quality set to Auto or High, and a stable internet connection of at least 15 Mbps. Netflix also requires a supported Windows environment and a computer and display path that meet its additional Ultra HD conditions. Its Windows guidance lists Edge, Chrome, and the Netflix Windows app as playback options capable of up to 4K; the app can support 4K with HDR on compatible systems.
The 15 Mbps figure is stated for Ultra HD; it should not be treated as a universal minimum for 1080p. Nor does a qualifying plan or fast connection alone guarantee 4K. Plan names and entitlements vary by country and can change, so check your local Netflix account details rather than relying on a plan name or price from another market.

On a Mac, Netflix lists Safari—not Edge—as the browser capable of up to 4K. A browser’s platform-specific listing matters more than whether it is made by Microsoft.
If Netflix looks softer than expected
A 1080p or 4K monitor does not prove that Netflix is delivering a stream at that resolution: lower-resolution video can be scaled to fill the screen. Likewise, a browser’s maximum does not tell you the resolution Netflix is using at a particular moment. Title availability, account settings, network conditions, and device or display compatibility can all matter.
- Identify the operating system. Confirm whether you are on Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS. Netflix’s limit for a browser can change by platform. Windows 8 and 8.1 may still run Netflix, but Netflix lists them as SD-only; its Windows guidance lists Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as SD environments. - Check the browser version and platform ceiling. Update to at least the version Netflix lists, then confirm that browser’s maximum for your operating system. For Windows Full HD, Firefox and Opera are listed options; for Windows 4K, Netflix lists Edge, Chrome, and its Windows app.
- Check account playback quality. A lower data-usage setting can limit playback quality. For 4K, Netflix specifically says to set playback quality to Auto or High. Account playback settings can be reviewed through Netflix’s account help.
- Check plan eligibility for 4K. Netflix requires a plan that supports Ultra HD for Windows 4K. The reviewed requirement does not establish one universal plan rule for 1080p in every country, so do not assume Full HD always requires a 4K plan.
- Check connection stability. For 4K, verify that the connection can sustain Netflix’s stated 15 Mbps minimum. A fast connection is necessary under that guidance but is not sufficient by itself to unlock Ultra HD.
- For 4K, check the device and display path. Confirm the computer meets Netflix’s additional Ultra HD requirements and that the display setup is compatible. If the browser or operating system is already at a lower ceiling, changing account settings will not exceed it.
- Test again without expecting every title to reach the ceiling. Netflix’s table describes maximum capability, not a guarantee for every title, device, network condition, or viewing session. If one title looks softer, that alone does not establish that the browser is capped.
Netflix supports HTML5 playback in Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, and Opera. It ended Silverlight support on September 13, 2023; use a current supported browser rather than trying to restore the retired player. See Netflix’s supported browsers and system requirements.

In short, switching to Edge may be a sensible starting point for Windows 4K, but it is not a universal fix for soft playback—and it is unnecessary just to reach Netflix’s listed 1080p ceiling on Windows.

Does Chrome support 1080p Netflix on Windows?
Yes. Netflix lists Chrome 117 or later on Windows 10 or 11 for up to 4K, provided other Ultra HD conditions are met.

Is Edge required for Netflix 4K?
No. Netflix lists Chrome and the Netflix Windows app as well as Edge for up to 4K on compatible Windows systems. On macOS, Safari is the browser Netflix lists for up to 4K.
Why is Netflix only 720p on Linux?
Netflix’s current table lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge up to 720p on Linux, while Opera is listed up to 1080p. Netflix also cautions that Linux playback is not guaranteed and is not supported for customer-service troubleshooting.
Can a 4K monitor still show a lower-resolution Netflix stream?
Yes. The display can scale a lower-resolution stream to fill the screen; the monitor’s resolution does not establish the resolution Netflix is delivering.
Does a faster internet connection force Netflix to use 4K?
No. Netflix’s 15 Mbps stable-connection figure is one Ultra HD requirement, not a guarantee. A qualifying plan, supported device and display path, compatible playback method, and suitable playback setting are also relevant.
