Does Cole die within the first 20 minutes?
The precise timing comes from a different, less firmly verified source. On January 20, 2026, Maxblizz reported leaked test-screening details attributed to an X account called MAJESTIC, including the claim that Cole dies within the first 20 minutes. That report does not independently authenticate the attendee or the underlying account. GamesRadar+ confirms an early death in a fight, but does not establish the exact minute mark.
Why did the film kill off Cole Young?
Slater said the filmmakers wanted deaths that would surprise different parts of the audience. He explained that longtime fans had been vocal about not responding to Cole in the first film, while casual viewers might be shocked by his death. In his words, “The idea was very much we need some deaths that are going to shock everybody.”

Slater also praised Lewis Tan, who plays Cole, while describing the character’s reception among hardcore fans: “I love Lewis Tan. I think Lewis is the best, but Cole was a character that the hardcore fans did not respond to in the first movie, and they were very vocal about that, and very vocal about calling for his head.” These are the screenwriter’s stated creative rationale, not a measure of audience opinion beyond the response he described.
What did the director say about Cole’s place in the sequel?
Director Simon McQuoid framed the decision as an ensemble-balance question, as reported in The Village Voice’s interview: “So, the whole Cole Young thing — it was very much about, we want to bring in these new characters, but how do we balance this?” McQuoid praised Tan and said conversations about using the actor’s talent in the future were ongoing, but did not confirm a specific return.

Will Lewis Tan or Cole Young return?
Slater has expressed hope that Tan will appear in the franchise again. In comments from a MovieWeb interview reported by ComicBook.com on May 15, 2026, he said: “I will say Lewis is awesome, and he definitely gets shortchanged in this movie. But, if I had my way, this will not be the last that we see of Lewis Tan in the Mortal Kombat universe.” That is Slater’s wish, not confirmation of a future casting or story plan. It also leaves open the distinction between Tan returning to the franchise and Cole Young returning as a character.
