Greater Union Morley’s final screening was on 14 September 2025, ending a 31-year run that began in September 1994. The cinema is closed. A later report said HOYTS and ACE Cinemas planned a new multiplex at Galleria for late 2026, but that was a target—not confirmation that the venue opened.
When did Greater Union Morley close?
The cinema’s final screening took place on 14 September 2025. PerthNow reported that Greater Union Morley had opened in September 1994, making the span from opening to closure 31 years; the report did not give an exact opening day. PerthNow reported the closure and its history, while ABC Perth reported the final-screening date.
How was the closure announced?
The operators notified loyalty members by letter in early September 2025. PerthNow quoted the notice: “After many wonderful years bringing movie magic to the big screen, we are sad to announce that Greater Union Morley will be closing its doors.” The letter also thanked the community, saying the cinema had been “a much-loved part of the community” and expressing gratitude to everyone who had shared movie moments there. The statements were attributed to the operators’ letter, not to a named spokesperson. PerthNow reproduced the notice.
Why did the cinema close?
The closure reports do not state the operator’s reason. PerthNow also covered a Galleria redevelopment announced on 20 August 2025, including updated fashion and lifestyle offerings, an alfresco dining and entertainment area called The Terrace, and casual dining options in Centre Court. That redevelopment was reported as context; the available reporting does not establish that it caused the cinema’s closure.

What is planned for the former cinema at Galleria?
On 23 October 2025, PerthNow reported that HOYTS Australia & New Zealand and ACE Cinemas planned a new multiplex at the Galleria site, with a late-2026 opening target. The target is not proof that the cinema opened. As of 8 October 2026, the HOYTS locations page listed ACE HOYTS Midland Gate and ACE HOYTS Rockingham among its Western Australian venues but did not show Morley; that omission alone does not establish whether the proposal was cancelled or delayed. Why did Morley keep the Greater Union name?
By September 2025, many Greater Union locations had been rebranded as Event Cinemas, but PerthNow reported that Morley was still trading under the Greater Union name. Customers could buy tickets through Event’s website and app before the cinema closed. The brand context explains the name used at Morley; it does not change the venue’s closure date.
