Yes—Photobucket is still operating and people still use it, but it is no longer the mainstream public photo-sharing community many people remember from the 2000s. In 2026, its practical role is closer to cloud photo storage, private group sharing, legacy-account recovery and paid image hosting. It can still be useful, especially if your photos are already there, but it is a poor match for unlimited free backup or a lively public photography network.
What Photobucket is today
Photobucket’s current product combines three services:
- Personal storage: photo and video backup, albums, search, tagging, editing, playback and mobile access.
- Group sharing: controlled spaces for families, weddings, teams, trips and work events, rather than an open social feed.
- Image hosting: paid plans provide direct links and embedding for websites, forums, blogs and other pages.
Photobucket describes new mobile apps, automatic backup, private sharing and its Group Buckets product in its 2025 product announcement. Those are first-party claims, not an independent assessment of app quality or reliability.

Yes. The website, support center, mobile-related documentation and subscription plans are current. Photobucket’s Free Plan documentation was updated on August 11, 2026, which indicates ongoing maintenance of the service and its onboarding model.

That does not mean Photobucket has returned to its former cultural prominence. The company says it has more than 70 million customers and 17 billion photos and videos, but those are cumulative, company-reported figures—not independently audited monthly-active-user numbers. A March 10, 2026 federal court opinion separately described 13 billion stored photos and said that, by 2024, the “vast majority” of users had not accessed their accounts in years. The figures differ because they come from different records and dates; neither establishes current popularity.
Photobucket does not appear to publish a reliable, independently verifiable current monthly-active-user figure in the sources reviewed. The defensible conclusion is that it is an operating niche service with a large historical archive, not a proven mass-market social network.
Who still uses Photobucket?
“Users” can mean several different populations:
- Legacy account holders recovering family photos, scans or old web images.
- Paying subscribers who need storage, group uploads or hosting.
- Families, teams and event groups that want one controlled upload location.
- Forum, blog and website owners who need direct image embeds through a Hosting plan.
- People seeking a provider outside Apple or Google for a separate photo archive.
Many old Photobucket links encountered on the web are evidence of its historical reach, not proof that the original account owner remains active.

Current plans and prices
The following U.S.-dollar prices were visible in August 2026. Taxes, promotions, geography and checkout totals can change, so verify the final amount before subscribing.

Photobucket’s support pricing page and main pricing page present annual discounts and plan labels somewhat differently. Treat these as observed price signals, not permanent rates.
What “free” means now
The free plan is available only when you first sign up. It includes up to three Groups, unlimited invitations, personal and social sharing, search, organization, editing, WhatsApp and Facebook transfers, automatic backup and video playback.
Its limits make it unsuitable as a complete free archive:

- Only the 50 most recent photos and videos in each Group are viewable.
- Older material can remain stored but hidden unless you upgrade.
- Individual downloads are allowed, but bulk downloads are not.
- Advanced sorting is excluded.
In practical terms, “free” is a restricted way to try the service or share a small, recent selection—not unlimited archival storage.
Can Photobucket still host images on other sites?
Yes, but use the correct plan. Photobucket’s Hosting plan includes direct photo-embed links. That is different from ordinary storage or private group sharing:
- Storage: your files are kept and organized in your account.
- Sharing: invited people or link recipients view them in Photobucket.
- Embedding: an image is displayed from Photobucket inside another website, forum or blog.
Do not assume an old URL will work forever, that every legacy link remains active, or that a free account includes external hosting. Hosting is a paid product according to the current plan documentation.

Why the name still carries baggage
Photobucket was founded more than 20 years ago and became widely known for free accounts and third-party image hosting. In 2017 it introduced a heavily criticized hosting fee initially reported at $399 per year, then rescinded that fee and introduced lower-priced tiers. The episode is summarized in a March 2026 federal court opinion.

That history explains why some users distrust the platform, but the $399 figure is not today’s price. Current first-party pages show substantially lower monthly plans.
Privacy and terms: read before uploading personal photos
Privacy is the most important qualification to any recommendation. The March 2026 court record describes Photobucket’s 2024 outreach to dormant users and a reactivation process that required acceptance of updated terms. The record discusses a biometric-information privacy policy and language concerning possible commercialization or licensing of public user-uploaded content for biometric and artificial-intelligence or machine-learning purposes. It also describes geographic exclusions and opt-out language.
These points are a description of the court record and relevant terms, not a finding that Photobucket currently sells every user’s photos or facial data. Terms and policies can change. Before uploading identifiable people, children, medical images or other sensitive material, read the current Terms of Use and Privacy Policy directly. Pay attention to the distinction between public uploads, private albums and groups, biometric information, licensing or AI-related provisions, opt-out procedures and the law in your jurisdiction.
Recovering an old Photobucket library
An old account may still contain photos even if you have not logged in for years. Access, visibility and download options depend on the account’s state and plan. Use this sequence:

- Visit Photobucket’s official sign-in or account-recovery page.
- Try every historical email address before creating a new account.
- Reset the password and complete any identity verification.
- Check whether albums and originals are visible after signing in.
- Review the current Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before accepting updated terms.
- Download irreplaceable images. On the free plan, downloads are individual rather than bulk.
- Upgrade only if expanded visibility, bulk access or hosting justifies the recurring fee.
- Keep a second copy on another drive or service before deleting or changing the account.
Do not assume every deleted, deactivated or inaccessible account can be restored. If older content is stored but hidden under the free plan, upgrading may be necessary to view it, but it is not a guarantee of recovery.

Choose Google Photos or iCloud+ for automatic everyday phone backup, Flickr for public photography discovery, SmugMug for professional delivery, Imgur for casual public links, and self-hosting for maximum control. Photobucket’s strongest differentiators are an existing legacy archive, controlled groups and paid embedding.
Who should use Photobucket in 2026?
It is reasonable when:
- You already have a Photobucket archive.
- You need a dedicated service outside an Apple or Google ecosystem.
- A family, team or event needs a shared upload space.
- You need direct image embeds and accept a Hosting subscription.
- You are willing to review current privacy terms and maintain another backup.
Look elsewhere when:
- You want unlimited free storage or bulk downloads.
- You want a large, active public photography community.
- You need anonymous, highly dependable business-grade content delivery.
- You expect advanced AI organization comparable to Google Photos or Apple Photos.
- You dislike recurring subscriptions or are unwilling to accept current data-use terms.
Verdict
Photobucket has not shut down. It is alive, maintained and viable for specific jobs—but its center of gravity has moved from public social photo sharing to storage, private groups, legacy recovery and paid hosting. There is no reliable public evidence that it is broadly popular today, and its historical customer totals should not be confused with active users.

For ordinary automatic backup, compare Google Photos or iCloud+; for public photography, Flickr; for professional galleries, SmugMug. Whatever you choose, keep an independent second copy.
