Does an AMD Ryzen APU Use Less Power Than a Discrete GPU for Nonstop YouTube Encoding?

A Ryzen APU may use AMD AMF hardware encoding, but only a matched wall-power test can show whether it uses less energy than a discrete GPU for your nonstop YouTube workload.

Not necessarily. A Ryzen APU may encode a YouTube livestream using AMD AMF hardware encoding, but the available evidence does not establish that an APU always uses less electricity than a discrete GPU. The answer depends on the specific chips and complete systems, whether the discrete card can power down, and the encoding settings. To find a winner, measure both systems at the wall while they run the same sustained workload.

First, clarify what “YouTube encoding” means

If you are streaming live from a computer, your PC encodes the video before sending it to YouTube. An APU or discrete GPU may perform that local encoding. If you upload a recorded file, your computer may encode or transcode it before upload; YouTube also processes videos on its own servers after upload, but that server-side work is not power drawn by your PC.

The distinction matters: evidence about AMD’s local hardware encoding does not tell you how much power YouTube’s servers use.

Can a Ryzen APU hardware-encode a stream?

A supported APU can use AMD Advanced Media Framework (AMF), AMD’s framework for hardware-accelerated video encoding and related processing. OBS lists AMD AMF as a hardware-encoding option on Windows and Linux. The available codecs and features depend on the exact processor generation, driver, operating system and software version; check compatibility for your specific system before choosing settings. OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance and AMD GPUOpen’s AMF documentation describe these capabilities.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Hardware encoding moves video-encoding work to specialized hardware rather than relying only on the CPU. OBS recommends hardware encoders for performance because they can take work off the CPU. That is not a measurement of whole-system power, nor a claim that an APU beats a discrete GPU on watts.

Why the APU-versus-GPU power result varies

  • The parts differ. “Ryzen APU” and “discrete GPU” cover many generations and models with different encoding capabilities and power behavior.
  • The whole system counts. The motherboard, memory, storage, cooling, power supply and background services contribute to wall draw. A chip’s TDP, encoder utilization or CPU utilization alone does not give total system consumption.
  • The discrete card may not be fully idle. A system with both integrated and discrete graphics may keep the card active for rendering, capture or other work. Do not assume it is either completely asleep or fully loaded.
  • Settings change the workload. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate or quality target, and encoder settings must be matched for a fair comparison.
  • Output and stability matter too. The lowest-watt configuration is not useful if it cannot maintain the required picture quality or runs into dropped or overloaded frames.

In a multi-GPU setup, record which device renders or captures and which one encodes. OBS notes that using different GPUs for OBS and the captured application can cause capture or performance issues; its GPU selection guide explains the configuration concern.

How to compare two systems fairly

  1. Choose the actual candidates. Record the exact APU and discrete GPU models, operating system, driver versions and OBS version. Confirm that each encoder supports the codec and output settings you need.
  2. Match the job. Use the same video input, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate or quality target, and relevant encoder settings. Keep other running software and peripherals as similar as practical.
  3. Measure at the wall. Use a plug-in electricity meter or a reliable whole-system measurement method. Measure idle draw separately, then average wall watts during the same sustained encoding workload on each system.
  4. Run long enough for representative behavior. Let each setup reach steady operation and log its average draw over a meaningful period. Keep background services, storage, cooling and network hardware as consistent as possible; note any differences.
  5. Track whether the result is usable. Alongside watts, check stream output quality, dropped or overloaded frames, and stability over a long run. Record which GPU is rendering, capturing and encoding.
  6. Convert average watts to energy for your schedule. Multiply average watts by operating hours to get watt-hours; divide by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours. For example, a measured average of 100 W over 24 hours is 2.4 kWh. This is an arithmetic example, not a measured result for either kind of system.

Compare electricity cost using your own tariff and the measured kWh. The available review of the Ryzen 5 5600G discusses power and thermals, but it is not a matched, continuous YouTube-encoding comparison against a specified discrete GPU. It cannot establish a general wattage advantage or a payback period for choosing an APU. See Tom’s Hardware’s Ryzen 5 5600G review for that model-specific context.

What this means for an always-on channel

If you need to encode locally, decide using measured wall power for your exact systems—not a general rule about APUs, discrete cards or processor TDP. Also consider whether the chosen configuration can sustain the required output reliably. If the goal is simply to keep prerecorded video streaming to YouTube around the clock, local encoding hardware is only one possible approach.
