1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can use FFmpeg on Ubuntu to send prepared stories to YouTube Live continuously, but a single 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube replay. You need an eligible, verified channel, media you have permission to stream, a stable outbound connection, and an encoder setup that YouTube accepts. Keep a local recording; if a complete on-platform archive matters, plan shorter sessions instead of relying on one stream that exceeds 12 hours.
How the Ubuntu and FFmpeg setup works
Ubuntu runs the encoder, FFmpeg reads and loops or schedules your prepared media, and YouTube Studio provides the ingest URL and stream key. FFmpeg sends the encoded video and audio to that endpoint. The stream can continue while the machine and connection remain available, but this arrangement does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
You can run it on a local Ubuntu computer or a rented VPS. Compare the options by sustained upload capacity and headroom, host availability and access to restart or alert systems, media storage and local-recording needs, cost, and whether you already have suitable hardware. A public GitHub example describes an Ubuntu VPS, FFmpeg, local media and a systemd service; it is an implementation example, not an official YouTube recipe or proof of reliability. No particular VPS provider or Ubuntu release is established here.
Check channel eligibility and prepare YouTube Live
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its guidance says streamers must be at least 16. YouTube also says channels may encounter daily live-stream creation limits. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream’s provided server URL and key in FFmpeg. Studio’s labels and layout may change, so use the encoder-stream setup for the event you intend to run.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in public logs or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set the audience accurately. Choose whether the content is made for kids based on the content and audience, not on which features you want. This designation changes available YouTube features; see the next section.
Choose media and a looping strategy
Prepare the story video, narration, illustrations and any music before configuring an unattended stream. Decide whether FFmpeg should repeat one file or cycle through a playlist, and whether you need transitions or a fixed order. The exact loop syntax and audio/video synchronization approach depend on the media layout and installed FFmpeg build; there is no single command line established here as a robust fit for every setup.

Before leaving the stream unattended, test the chosen files from beginning to end, including the point where a loop or playlist moves to the next item. Check that audio continues, video is present, and the stream does not stall at file boundaries. Keep a local recording if preserving the complete program matters.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, its recommendations include H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance when choosing resolution and frame rate.

| Setting | YouTube guidance or practical choice |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended; use the URL YouTube Studio supplies. |
| Video codec | H.264. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3; YouTube’s stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR). |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds. |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate. |
The bitrate figures are YouTube Help recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or encoder will work. A higher resolution or frame rate requires more encoding capacity and upload bandwidth; choose quality the host can sustain steadily. YouTube’s network guidance recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. Account for all feeds if you use a primary and backup feed, and verify actual stream health rather than treating a speed test as a guarantee. See YouTube’s bitrate and resolution guidance and YouTube’s network tips.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not count on a complete YouTube archive from one 24-hour event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The documentation describes archive and DVR limits; it does not establish a maximum permitted live runtime or guarantee that repeated event creation will be unrestricted. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| One long continuous event | Continuous live availability matters more than relying on a complete YouTube replay. | A stream over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. |
| Shorter scheduled events plus local recording | Viewers need on-platform replays or you need dependable copies of the program. | You must plan and manage separate sessions; YouTube does not promise repeated stream creation will always be available. |
For an important archive, record locally and monitor that the recording file continues to grow. A local copy protects against an incomplete platform archive, but it does not make YouTube’s replay complete by itself.
Made-for-kids settings affect interaction and ads
Classify the stream accurately in YouTube Studio. When a livestream is set as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still appear. Do not plan a children’s stream around chat participation or personalized-ad monetization. Any monetization also depends on channel eligibility and applicable YouTube policies. YouTube Help: Features impacted by made-for-kids content.

YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Copyright matches or policy violations can result in restrictions or removal. Review YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and the platform’s rules before broadcasting.
Supervise the encoder instead of assuming it will stay up
Unattended streaming needs operational safeguards as well as a working FFmpeg command. A process supervisor such as systemd can start the encoder at boot and be configured to restart it after certain failures, but restart behavior is a design choice—not an uptime guarantee. Review FFmpeg logs, watch YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, and use alerts you can actually receive and act on.
- Test the complete media sequence and confirm the Live Control Room preview shows the expected picture and sound.
- Monitor outbound bandwidth, CPU use and storage so encoding, upload or recording does not silently fail.
- Check logs after startup and after any restart. Confirm the process is sending media rather than repeatedly failing on a missing file, expired key or network error.
- Verify the local recording exists and continues to grow; make sure the host has enough free storage for the planned recording.
- Plan a human response for an alert. Automatic restarts can recover some process failures, but they cannot fix every network, rights, account or platform issue.
YouTube documents daily creation limits and archive behavior, but does not promise that repeatedly creating streams will avoid limits. Do not use rapid restart loops to evade platform restrictions. If you choose planned shorter events for replay, schedule them deliberately and check the channel’s live-streaming status.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Stream URL or key, FFmpeg process, network route, or an input that failed to open. | Check the FFmpeg log and confirm the current event’s ingest URL and key in YouTube Studio. Verify the media path and that the encoder process is running. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health is poor | Upload bandwidth without headroom, host congestion, or bitrate too high for the connection. | Check sustained outbound capacity and YouTube stream health; reduce bitrate or output quality until the connection can sustain it with headroom. |
| Picture appears but audio is missing or drifts | Audio stream selection, codec or encoding settings, or timing differences between files. | Inspect the FFmpeg input and output streams, confirm audio is present in the preview, and test synchronization across file transitions before restarting unattended operation. |
| Stream stops at a story boundary | Loop or playlist handling, an unreadable next file, or an unexpected end of input. | Test transitions with the complete media set and review logs for the first file or timing error. Adjust the loop/scheduling strategy for the installed FFmpeg build. |
| The broadcast is live but no full replay appears | The event exceeded 12 hours or DVR/archive behavior was limited. | Use your local recording for the full copy; for future on-platform replays, consider shorter scheduled sessions. |
| Encoder repeatedly reconnects | Network interruption, invalid or changed stream key, host restarts, or a restart policy that loops on a persistent error. | Check the key and network, inspect timestamps in the logs, and correct the underlying cause before allowing retries. Avoid rapid repeated stream creation. |
