Not automatically. A hardware encoder can take video-encoding work off your CPU and improve streaming performance, but that alone does not show that your whole PC uses less electricity or that your monthly bill falls. Check for a compatible encoder you already own, then compare measured power, stream quality and stability under the same workload. A new encoder also has an upfront cost that must be included in any savings calculation.
What a hardware encoder changes—and what it does not prove
OBS describes hardware encoding as shifting work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. It generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, while warning that older-generation encoders may deliver lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate. That is evidence about workload and performance, not a measured reduction in total system power or electricity cost. OBS’s hardware encoding guide does not establish a monthly savings figure.
A hardware encoder can mean an encoder built into a GPU or supported processor, selected in streaming software, or a separate standalone device. Those are different setups with different purchase and power costs. YouTube distinguishes computer-based software encoders from standalone hardware encoders; its examples of dedicated devices do not demonstrate a consumer PC-streaming payback. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes available approaches, not which one costs less.
Check your existing hardware before buying anything
OBS documents support for NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync, with compatibility depending on hardware generation and operating system. If one is already available, testing it in OBS may improve performance without buying a dedicated encoder. Intel notes that Quick Sync may not appear in OBS’s encoder menu when the hardware does not support it. NVIDIA’s codec and preset guidance is generation-dependent: codec availability and the trade-offs between image quality and encoder performance vary by GPU. Check the current recommendations for your GPU and software rather than assuming every NVENC setup behaves alike. A second PC is another possible gaming-and-streaming arrangement identified by Intel, but adding a computer and associated equipment is not evidence of lower total household cost.
Measure the cost on your own setup
For a fair comparison, run the same content and scenes at the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate and stream duration. Measure whole-system power in both cases—not just CPU utilization or the encoder’s workload. Keep quality and dropped or missed frames in view: a lower-power result would not be a useful saving if it comes with an unacceptable stream.

- Establish a baseline. Record average whole-system watts while streaming with your current encoder.
- Test the hardware option. Change only the encoder where possible, then measure watts during a comparable stream with the same settings and content.
- Use your actual usage and tariff. Calculate monthly energy cost as: average system watts ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours per month × your electricity price per kWh.
- Account for new costs. Subtract any recurring service cost when estimating net monthly savings. If buying hardware, include its purchase price and the period you expect to use it before judging payback.
- Check the output. Compare image quality at the same bitrate and note dropped or missed frames. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may trade image quality for performance.
The official guidance cited here does not provide a controlled whole-PC power comparison, a universal electricity rate, hardware purchase prices or a payback period. Without measurements for your own machine and local tariff, a generic wattage reduction or savings estimate would be guesswork.
Does NVENC use less power than x264?
NVENC and x264 describe different ways to encode video: NVENC uses a supported NVIDIA GPU encoder, while x264 is software encoding. OBS says hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU, but that does not establish that the complete computer draws fewer watts with NVENC. Compare whole-system power and stream quality on your machine rather than inferring a bill reduction from lower CPU load.

Would a dedicated encoder or second PC lower the bill?
The sources do not establish either option as a cost-saving purchase for PC-based YouTube streaming. A standalone encoder has its own purchase and operating costs; a dual-PC setup adds another computer and equipment. Consider either only for a need such as a particular workflow or performance constraint, and calculate total costs from measured power and actual prices before buying.

Continuous prerecorded streaming is a different use case from encoding a live camera or gaming session. YouTube lists cloud services such as Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams without a dedicated PC. That establishes the use case, not that cloud service is cheaper: compare its actual subscription cost with the electricity cost you would avoid by not running your PC. YouTube’s listing does not supply that price comparison.
