Documentary movies and shows cover far more than one subject or style. To find one that fits, start with what you want to explore—history, nature, sports, culture, science, or real-life stories—then choose a feature, short, or episodic series and check where it is available in your region.
Choose by subject, not by a single definition of documentary
Documentary is an umbrella form, not a promise of one neutral way to record reality. As The Criterion Collection puts it, “the documentary has taken so many forms over the past century that it is too simple to call it the mere recording of reality.” The same collection attributes the phrase “Life caught unawares” to filmmaker Dziga Vertov; that is Criterion’s attribution of the quotation.

Catalogs reflect that variety by grouping documentaries around subjects. PBS’s Documentaries & Indie Films catalog ranges across history, science, nature, culture, journalism, and real-life stories. Netflix’s US documentary catalog includes history and sports groupings as well as award-winning titles. These are useful discovery examples, not exhaustive lists or a ranking of services.
- History and journalism: Look for films and series centered on events, institutions, reporting, or public life.
- Nature and science: Browse when you want stories about the natural world, research, or scientific ideas.
- Sports, biography, and culture: These categories can lead to personal stories, communities, creative work, and competition.
Pick the format that fits your viewing time
A documentary can be a feature film, a short, or an episodic show. PBS’s catalog includes both episodes and standalone specials, so a documentary catalog does not necessarily mean a shelf of feature-length films.

Where to find documentary movies and shows
Use streaming catalogs for current regional options, curated collections to browse by selection, and physical releases when you want to own a particular edition. Availability, subscription requirements, and formats can vary by country and change over time; check the title’s current listing before planning to watch or buy it.
| Discovery route | What it offers | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PBS documentary and indie-film catalog | Examples include Ghost in the Machine, My Omaha, ASCO: Without Permission, Remake, and Pacific Mother; the catalog shows episodes and standalone specials. | Check the current title page and access in your location. |
| Netflix documentary catalog (US) | Catalog-page examples include The Social Dilemma, Apollo 11, My Octopus Teacher, and David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. | This is a US catalog example; confirm current playability in your territory. |
| Criterion documentary collection | A curated collection with shop links for titles. Its page showed 131 results when consulted in 2026; that is a live collection count, not an industry statistic. | Confirm the specific release, format, and availability before buying. |
Use awards and curation as discovery lenses
Award recognition can help surface documentaries, but it is one way to browse—not proof that a film is right for every viewer. The Academy’s 92nd Awards nominations document separately lists documentary feature and documentary short-subject nominees and credits their filmmakers. Documentary-feature nominees included American Factory, The Cave, The Edge of Democracy, For Sama, and Honeyland. These are historical examples from that awards year, not a current best-of list.

Curated collections offer a different route: they help you browse titles assembled by a particular collection rather than by a general streaming category. For example, Criterion’s documentary collection includes works by Sara Gómez and links to its shop. Check the details of an individual release if you are seeking a physical copy.
