Documentaries Similar to 61 Bullets for Viewers Who Want More Films on Its Subject

If 61 Bullets left you wanting more about disputed political assassinations, start with Huey Long: A Film by Ken Burns. It is the closest subject match, supplying the Louisiana politics and biography that the 55-minute film can only sketch. Then choose RFK for a family-centered account of political violence, JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob for competing organized-crime allegations, or Colosio: Political Assassination for an international, serialized investigation. Welcome to Leith is a thematic stretch rather than another assassination documentary.

What makes a documentary similar to 61 Bullets?

Released in 2014 and listed at 55 minutes by Rotten Tomatoes, 61 Bullets revisits the 1935 assassination of Louisiana senator Huey Long. The accepted account identifies Dr. Carl Weiss as the shooter; Long’s bodyguards then killed Weiss. The film follows the Weiss family as they examine the evidence, motive and historical record behind that account.

The documentary’s distinctive appeal is not simply that it covers a famous killing. It combines a family legacy with an unresolved historical question: does the official story explain all the available evidence? An Arts Fuse review described the record as “murky and distressingly free of factual evidence” and discussed the possibility that Long’s bodyguards may have shot the senator, deliberately or accidentally. That is a disputed hypothesis raised in commentary around the film, not an established finding.

The best follow-ups therefore fall into several groups:

  • Huey Long biography and Louisiana political history;
  • assassination documentaries that examine a public figure’s life and family aftermath;
  • investigations built around competing explanations, testimony and allegations; and
  • international case studies of political murder.

The titles below are ordered by how closely they match what 61 Bullets is doing, not by a claim that they reach the same conclusion.

Huey Long: A Film by Ken Burns: the essential next watch

This PBS documentary is the closest match because it returns to the same person, state and political system. PBS presents Long as Louisiana’s governor from 1928 to 1932 and a United States senator from 1932 until his assassination in 1935. PBS Distribution lists the film as a one-part, 90-minute history documentary.

Where 61 Bullets concentrates on the killing and the Weiss family’s challenge to the accepted narrative, the Ken Burns film offers the biography needed to understand why Long generated such intense loyalty and hostility. Its subject includes his populist program, reform platform, graft, political machine and pursuit of power. That context changes how the assassination questions land: Long was not an isolated victim but one of the most consequential and controversial political figures in Depression-era Louisiana.

Why it belongs first in your watch order

Choose this film when your main question is “Who was Huey Long, and why did his death matter?” It is less a forensic re-investigation than a broad political portrait, so it should not be treated as a replacement for 61 Bullets‘s family-centered examination of the shooting. Viewed together, the films provide complementary scopes: one builds the public and political record; the other tests whether the final account of the killing is complete.

Format and access

PBS marks the title as streaming, while PBS Distribution lists DVD/Blu-ray, Apple iTunes and Amazon Video. Availability, territory and pricing can change, so check the current PBS watch page or retailer listing in your country before planning a viewing.

RFK: political violence through a family’s story

RFK, from PBS’s American Experience, is a strong second choice for viewers who responded to the human dimension of 61 Bullets. PBS describes it as following Robert F. Kennedy after the assassination of his brother John, tracing his changing political identity and then his own assassination. Historians, journalists, biographers and people with first-hand recollections contribute to the account.

The connection is structural rather than geographic. RFK does not investigate Huey Long or Dr. Carl Weiss, but it asks how a family and a political movement absorb a killing that becomes part of national memory. That makes it useful after 61 Bullets if you are interested in the relationship between public myth, private grief and a changing political identity.

What kind of viewing experience to expect

This is a biography built around transformation and aftermath, not a short-form mystery. It gives more space to Kennedy’s development as a public figure and to the testimony surrounding his life. The PBS American Experience listing gives an air date of October 4, 2004; the program’s age is worth noting when you compare its presentation with newer productions.

JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob: an allegation-centered investigation

For viewers who were most intrigued by the unresolved explanations in 61 Bullets, PBS’s JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob is the most direct tonal match among these recommendations. Journalist Jack Newfield examines lawyer Frank Ragano’s claims about mob involvement in CIA plots against Fidel Castro and in the assassinations of John Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa.

The key distinction is evidentiary posture. This is a film about claims, testimony and possible connections, not a settled account that has been conclusively established by the documentary. Ragano’s allegations should remain labeled as allegations when you discuss the film. The same discipline applies to the bodyguard-shooting possibility raised around 61 Bullets: a documentary can investigate a theory without proving it.

Who should choose it

Watch this if you prefer investigative journalism over a comprehensive biography and want institutions, organized crime and political power at the center. It is a better fit for questions such as “Who benefits from the official story?” or “How should testimony be weighed when records are incomplete?” It is a less suitable choice if you want a detailed account of Long’s Louisiana career.

Colosio: Political Assassination: an international case study

Colosio: Political Assassination moves the subject outside the United States. HBO describes the title as a three-part docuseries about the search for answers in the 1994 assassination of Mexican political candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio.

Its value for a 61 Bullets viewer lies in the recurring problem of political murder: an official explanation, a powerful victim, witnesses and institutions under pressure, and a public that wants to know whether the first account is complete. The Mexican setting and serialized structure make it a broader comparison rather than a companion biography of Huey Long.

How it differs from the other recommendations

The three-part format allows the investigation to unfold over multiple episodes instead of a single 55-minute film. That makes it the best option here if you want a sustained inquiry and an international perspective. Confirm current availability on Max in your territory; catalog placement can differ by country and change over time.

Welcome to Leith: a thematic, not subject-matter, companion

An Arts Fuse review paired Welcome to Leith with 61 Bullets because both documentaries examine communities confronting political violence and historical danger. It is not a Huey Long film, an assassination biography or an investigation of the Weiss case.

Recommend it only when the viewer’s interest is thematic: how ordinary communities respond when political extremism, coercion or a threatening historical legacy enters daily life. If the request is specifically for another documentary about a disputed political assassination, choose one of the four titles above instead.

Choose your next documentary by the question you still have

“I need more Huey Long.”

Choose Huey Long: A Film by Ken Burns. It supplies the governor-and-senator biography, reform agenda, graft allegations, political machine and pursuit of power that 61 Bullets leaves in the background.

“I want another assassination story with a strong family or personal dimension.”

Choose RFK. Its focus on Kennedy’s identity after his brother’s death and before his own assassination gives family memory and political change equal weight.

“I want competing explanations and organized-crime allegations.”

Choose JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob. Keep the film’s claims in their proper category: allegations examined by a journalist, not findings that have been established simply because they appear on screen.

“I want a case outside the United States and enough episodes to follow an investigation.”

Choose Colosio: Political Assassination, the three-part series about the 1994 killing of Luis Donaldo Colosio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want political danger and community conflict, even if there is no assassination case.”

Choose Welcome to Leith as a thematic extension.

How to watch these films critically

61 Bullets is valuable precisely because it treats the historical record as contested. That makes it a good starting point for a careful viewing method:

  1. Separate the established event from the disputed interpretation. Long was assassinated in 1935, and Dr. Carl Weiss was identified as the shooter before being killed by Long’s bodyguards. Whether that account explains every injury and piece of evidence is the question under examination.
  2. Identify who is making each claim. A family member, witness, journalist, historian and government record do not carry the same kind of evidence or authority.
  3. Notice the documentary’s scope. A 55-minute investigation, a 90-minute biography and a three-part series necessarily select different evidence and context.
  4. Keep allegations labeled. The mob and CIA connections discussed in JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob are presented as claims associated with Frank Ragano. They should not be rewritten as proven history.
  5. Compare context with controversy. Pairing the Ken Burns film with 61 Bullets lets you distinguish Long’s documented political career from arguments about the circumstances of his death.

Producer Yvonne Boudreaux summarized the filmmakers’ approach in a 2014 interview with Country Roads Magazine: “We just wanted it to be honest.” The statement is a useful standard for watching all of these films, especially when the evidence remains incomplete.

A practical viewing order

  1. 61 Bullets: establish the Weiss family’s challenge and the disputed shooting account.
  2. Huey Long: A Film by Ken Burns: add the political biography and Louisiana context.
  3. RFK: broaden the family-and-assassination perspective through another American political biography.
  4. JFK, Hoffa, and the Mob: move into allegation-driven investigation and organized-crime theories.
  5. Colosio: Political Assassination: extend the comparison internationally and across a three-part structure.
  6. Welcome to Leith: finish with the wider question of communities facing political violence, if that theme interests you.

No source establishes a settled consensus that overturns the accepted account of Long’s assassination. These recommendations are therefore best understood as different ways to examine political power, memory and disputed evidence—not as a single chain of films proving one alternative theory.
