In 2024, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday set off on a season of new monsters, time-spanning adventures and a mystery stretching across decades. The preview also promised a lively partnership between the new leads and a mix of returning characters and guest stars. The season has since aired, so those comments describe what viewers could expect at launch—not what is still upcoming.
Which Doctor Who season did the preview mean?
The headline’s “14th season” refers to the franchise’s Series 14 numbering. Official Doctor Who materials called the 2024 run Season 1, and Gatwa played the Fifteenth Doctor, not the Fourteenth. It was his full-season debut, alongside Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday. DoctorWho.tv’s May 2024 interview and its season preview use the official Season 1 framing.
This is now retrospective coverage: DoctorWho.tv says Gatwa’s final scenes aired in the May 31, 2025 season finale, after which the series moved on to Season 2. The official site’s Season 2 page gives that later context.
What stories and characters were ahead?
The January 2024 preview promised the Doctor and Ruby new monsters and journeys through time and space. The Disney and BBC announcement gave a sense of the range, describing adventures from Regency-era England to war-torn futures, with the pair meeting both friends and dangerous foes.

The announced returning characters included Rose Noble, played by Yasmin Finney, and Mel Bush, played by Bonnie Langford. The preview also identified Jinkx Monsoon as a major antagonist, Jonathan Groff in a mysterious role, Indira Varma as the Duchess, and Lenny Rush as Morris. Additional announced guest cast included Aneurin Barnard, Anita Dobson, Michelle Greenidge, Genesis Lynea, Jemma Redgrave and Angela Wynter. These were launch announcements; they are not a complete account of every episode or character arc.
Showrunner Russell T Davies framed the season around “Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries!” and a “terrifying secret” spanning time and space for decades. That description signaled a season combining episodic threats with a longer-running mystery, rather than a single setting or kind of adventure. The Disney/BBC announcement also describes the range of eras and guest roles.

How did Gatwa and Gibson describe the Doctor and Ruby?
Gatwa said he and Gibson had never met before filming but “just hit the ground running.” Gibson compared their onscreen rhythm to a tennis match: “Ruby says one thing and the Doctor says another,” with the exchanges coming “bam, bam, bam.” Their descriptions pointed to a partnership built around quick banter and contrasting energy.
Gibson called Ruby “an absolute fireball” who was “craving for adventure to happen.” She also connected the characters through abandonment: both the Doctor and Ruby are foundlings. When did Season 1 premiere, and where?
The 2024 launch differed by territory. Disney Branded Television and the BBC announced a simultaneous worldwide premiere outside the UK on Disney+ on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. EDT. In the UK, the season began on BBC iPlayer at 12:00 a.m. GMT on Saturday, May 11, with BBC One airing it later that day.
Those are the announced launch arrangements, not a guarantee of present-day streaming access. Catalogs and rights can change by country, so check the service available in your territory for current access. The March 15, 2024 Disney/BBC release set out the original platform and timing details.

What did the preview establish—and what did it leave open?
The public preview established the lead pairing, broad story range, several returning and guest characters, and the presence of a season-spanning mystery. It did not disclose the mystery’s resolution or provide a full episode-by-episode account. BBC Newsround’s interview description said Gatwa, Gibson and Davies teased “new stories, new monsters, and new chases,” and that Davies revealed an episode idea he had held for 14 years. The description alone does not supply further dialogue or details about that idea. BBC Newsround’s interview listing is the source for that description.
