How the status changed from May to June 2025
May 14: ABC said the show was still under discussion
In May, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told TVLine, “Doctor Odyssey is not on our schedule currently.” He added, “We’re in talks with [series creator] Ryan [Murphy], and we really look to him about what the next chapter might be.” At that point, the show’s future was unresolved; the comments came before later reports about the cast’s options.

June 27: TV Insider reported that cast options had expired
TV Insider reported that the cast’s options expired on June 23, describing the result as a default cancellation. Its report said ABC or Hulu could still potentially bring the series back later, but new cast deals would be needed.
June 28: TVLine reported the cast would not be retained
TVLine then reported that the cast’s options would not be picked up and described the series as cancelled after one season. It distinguished that industry status from a formal cancellation announcement, since a return remained possible in theory if the lead actors were re-signed.

What Doctor Odyssey is about
ABC describes Doctor Odyssey as a procedural set aboard a luxury cruise ship. Onboard doctor Max and the medical team handle medical crises at sea. The principal cast includes Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale and Don Johnson. ABC credits Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken as writers and executive producers, with 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Television among the production entities.
Did ratings explain the decision?
Ratings figures cited by the trade outlets provide context, but they use different measurement descriptions and should not be compared as if they were the same metric. TVLine reported a Season 1 average of 4.8 million weekly viewers with delayed playback in 2025, and said the series outdrew only Grey’s Anatomy in total viewers among six ABC dramas that season. TV Insider separately reported an average of 3.048 million viewers per episode ahead of the finale in 2025. These are outlet-reported figures, not an independently verified ABC ratings release.
