Spoilers for the “Doctor Odyssey” season-one finale, “The Wave, Part 2.” Max survives the disaster, Avery chooses him, and Tristan accepts their relationship. The episode closes its central rescue and love-triangle stories, but Avery’s medical-school plans leave a clear path for more. That path will not be taken: later reporting said the cast options expired and the series would not return for a second season.
What happens in “The Wave, Part 2”?
The season-one finale picks up after a tsunami leaves Dr. Max Bankman missing. ABC’s official synopsis says Max’s transmission goes silent and he and Barry take refuge in an abandoned church. Back aboard the Odyssey, Tristan takes charge while Avery leads a high-stakes mission to find Max.
Published episode recaps report that Max survives. Avery realizes she loves him, and the two end the episode together. Tristan accepts their pairing and remains close to the crew rather than becoming a simple obstacle to the couple.
The episode brings the show’s two ongoing tracks together: a shipboard emergency resolved through rescue, and the relationships among Max, Avery, and Tristan. The immediate danger and romantic question get answers, while the characters’ next choices remain less settled.

Does the finale leave room for another season?
What the ending resolves
The rescue plot reaches a clear endpoint, and the Max–Avery relationship is no longer left as a triangle in suspense. Those resolutions give the episode enough closure to work as an ending for the story viewers had followed through season one.
What remains open
Avery’s medical-school plan leaves a practical question hanging: would she leave the Odyssey, return to it, or try to balance the two? The episode does not settle that future. That unresolved choice gives the ending continuation potential, even though it does not undo the rescue or romantic resolution.

That balance is an interpretation of the aired finale, not a documented statement of creator intent: “The Wave, Part 2” can feel complete as a finale while still suggesting stories a second season could have explored.

- June 28–29, 2025: Later trade and television-industry reporting said the cast options had expired and the series would not return for a second season.
ABC has not been established as having publicly given a definitive explanation for the decision. A secondary report pointed to soft season averages and said the show was reportedly expensive to produce, but that does not amount to an official network reason.
