“New Blood,” the October 7, 2025 episode of Doc, comes closer to the medical drama its premise promises: its patient stories put care and clinical uncertainty back in the foreground. But the hour does not leave its personal and workplace conflicts behind. Joan’s severe new staff policy and a revelation about her history with Amy keep the medicine tied to character drama.
What happens in “New Blood”?
FOX lists “New Blood” as Season 2, Episode 3, with a 43-minute runtime. Its official synopsis spotlights three threads: a patient makes Amy confront the realities of medical tourism, TJ helps a veteran with a prosthetic, and Joan drops a bombshell.
The synopsis does not name the patient’s diagnosis, destination, procedure, or outcome. A review by Brittany Frederick identifies Amy’s patient as Claire Pinto, who has multiple sclerosis, and describes Amy giving her a controversial treatment that is not FDA-approved. Frederick says Claire wants it and appears to benefit. Those are details from the reviewer’s account, not medical guidance or an endorsement of the fictional treatment.
Frederick also describes a medical mystery involving TJ and another veteran. Together, these cases give the episode patient-centered stakes: the doctors must attend to individual needs, rather than treating the hospital as a backdrop for personal conflict alone.

Joan’s staff trial raises the hospital stakes
Joan’s first day as chief brings a blunt test for the staff: according to TheWrap’s October 7, 2025 interview, she puts every employee on a two-month trial to decide who remains on the payroll. That policy creates pressure across the hospital, making performance and job security part of the episode’s conflict.
Actor Felicity Huffman describes Joan as intent on making the hospital more excellent. She also says Joan’s diagnosis gives her a reason to focus on something larger than herself. TheWrap reports that a flashback reveals Amy was present when Joan learned of a serious diagnosis, before Amy’s accident. Amy supported her then, but current Amy cannot remember it.

That lost memory gives the reveal its emotional force: Amy once saw Joan through a vulnerable moment, while the Amy now rebuilding her life has no access to that shared history. Huffman captures Joan’s contrasting view of Amy: “A lot of this series has been about turning to Amy and going, ‘You were really harsh before. You were awful before.’ Joan is the one person that has gone, ‘Wait a second, you were excellent before. You were a genius,’” she told TheWrap.
Does the episode feel more like a medical drama?
In important ways, yes. The medical-tourism storyline and the veteran cases give the hour more patient-facing material than a hospital story driven only by romance, rivalry, or office politics. They also let the characters’ choices matter in a clinical context.

That does not make “New Blood” a hard-medical procedural. Joan’s staffing trial is a workplace-power story, and Amy’s forgotten connection to Joan is an interpersonal one. The medical plots and personal plots overlap: the hospital’s cases create room for character decisions, while the employment test changes the atmosphere in which those decisions are made.
There is a fair counterargument. In her episode review, Brittany Frederick argues that personal conflicts crowd out much of the medicine, even as she praises the patient stories as a source of the show’s potential. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measured screen-time breakdown or a consensus. The most accurate verdict is that the episode makes a stronger case for Doc as a medical drama without resolving the tension between cases and soapier character conflicts.

Where this episode fits in Amy’s story
FOX’s Season 2 announcement establishes Amy’s reset: after a car crash cost her eight years of memory, she is rebuilding her medical career as an intern. Joan, once Amy’s professor and mentor, becomes the new chief of internal medicine. “New Blood” uses that premise to make the Joan reveal consequential: Amy is not simply learning about the past, but encountering a relationship she cannot recall having lived.
