Possibly—but Taylor Swift has not confirmed that “Actually Romantic” is about Charli XCX. Swift described the song as a “love letter to someone who hates you,” and listeners have connected it to Charli’s “Sympathy Is a Knife.” Those clues make the theory plausible, not proven; Charli has said her song was about her own anxiety and denied that it was about Swift.
What Taylor Swift said about “Actually Romantic”
At the 2025 release-party presentation for The Life of a Showgirl, Swift described “Actually Romantic” as “sort of a love letter to someone who hates you.” She said the song grew from realizing that someone had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with her, and characterized the attention as flattering despite its negative edge. Variety Australia reported Swift’s comments.
Swift also said, “I don’t hate you and I don’t think about this, but thank you for all the effort, honestly,” and, “In my industry, attention is affection, and you’ve given me a whole lot of it.” These remarks describe the song’s attitude toward an unnamed person; Swift did not name Charli XCX.
Why listeners connect the song to Charli XCX
The theory links “Actually Romantic” to Charli’s “Sympathy Is a Knife,” which listeners had interpreted as addressing an unnamed pop star whose presence stirred insecurity. Fans also point to references in Swift’s song they connect to Charli, including “Boring Barbie,” an ex who ghosted Swift, and a song about disliking Swift’s face. The two artists’ public histories have also intersected through The 1975. TIME and The FADER describe the links listeners have drawn.
