But the mystery does not give the subject the depth it needs. Critics have faulted the screenplay and its handling of abuse, even as one review singled out Kriti Sanon’s climactic performance. For viewers seeking a thoughtful drama about domestic violence, the film’s thriller turns may not be enough.
What is Do Patti about?
Set in the fictional hill town of Devipur, the 2024 Hindi-language thriller follows police inspector Vidya Jyothi (Kajol) as an investigation draws her into the fraught lives of twin sisters Saumya and Shailee (both played by Kriti Sanon) and Dhruv Sood (Shaheer Sheikh), the volatile man connected to them. The story brings together a police inquiry, sibling rivalry, and domestic abuse, asking its mystery to carry both suspense and serious emotional stakes.
Kanika Dhillon wrote the film and produced it with Sanon; Shashanka Chaturvedi directed. Kathha Pictures and Blue Butterfly Films are the production companies.
Does the thriller work as a story about domestic abuse?
The central tension is whether the twin-sister mystery deepens the abuse story or crowds it out. Shubhra Gupta’s The Indian Express review, published October 25, 2024, gave the film 1.5 out of 5. Gupta’s assessment is that the premise has enough substance for a serious drama, but shallow writing and underdeveloped characters prevent it from becoming one. In that reading, the twists do not build the emotional or moral clarity the subject requires.

Scroll’s October 25, 2024 review also criticized the film’s treatment of domestic violence, arguing that it is too self-satisfied to leave a lasting point. That is a critical judgment, not a measurable claim about the film’s effect on audiences; it nevertheless identifies the risk in making abuse the foundation of a thriller that depends on revelations and reversals.
The police-investigation frame could have anchored the story in questions of evidence, accountability, and protection. Instead, Gupta questioned how Vidya shifts among investigative roles. The resulting credibility strain matters: when the investigator’s place in the story feels uncertain, the procedural frame has less power to clarify the stakes.

What do Kajol and Kriti Sanon bring to the film?
Sanon has the unusual challenge of playing both Saumya and Shailee, and the twin casting is central to the film’s mystery. Gupta identifies Sanon’s climactic scene as the point where she steals the film, a specific bright spot in an otherwise sharply critical review. That praise supports the conclusion that the performance can make an impression even when the screenplay does not give the characters enough depth.
Kajol’s Vidya is meant to connect the investigation with the sisters’ story. But the question raised by Gupta about the inspector’s shifting investigative roles points to a broader problem: a central performance cannot fully supply the moral or dramatic coherence that the writing leaves uncertain.

Is Do Patti worth watching?
It may suit viewers who want a twist-led Hindi thriller and are curious about Sanon’s dual role. If you are choosing it for a nuanced, sustained examination of domestic abuse, the cited reviews suggest caution: both point to shortcomings in the writing or the film’s treatment of its serious subject. The most defensible verdict is a mixed-to-negative one—the premise has dramatic promise, but the execution does not consistently make the thriller machinery serve the people at its centre.
