The cloud provider, the service sending the video, and the route to YouTube determine whether outbound network transfer is billed. Google Cloud lists a no-charge category for data transfer from specified Google Cloud virtual machines to YouTube; AWS warns that internet delivery outside AWS can incur charges; Azure has its own egress allowance and conditions. None of these rules makes every 24/7 YouTube stream universally free—or universally chargeable.
This is about the cloud bill for sending an encoder feed to YouTube, not YouTube’s later delivery of the stream to viewers. Compute, encoding, media services, and other resources can also cost money.
Why the answer depends on your exact setup
“Egress” generally means data leaving a cloud provider’s network. To identify the applicable charge, check the product that sends the feed, the destination category and route, the source region and network tier, and any allowances or account conditions. A virtual machine, managed live-streaming service, storage product, or third-party relay may have different pricing.
Google Cloud’s network pricing distinguishes ordinary internet transfer-out from traffic to named Google products. Its table lists transfer from a Google Cloud VM to specific products including YouTube as “No charge.” The stated category covers Compute Engine VMs, GKE nodes, and VMs running App Engine flexible environment. Google Cloud also publishes internet transfer-out rates by geography and network tier. Premium Tier is the default; Standard Tier must be specified. Those general internet rates should not automatically replace the separately listed VM-to-YouTube category. Check the pricing for the actual sending service and path. The AWS and Azure amounts are published monthly allowances, not estimates of a 24/7 stream’s cost. Confirm current terms for your account and region before forecasting spend.

Estimate how much data the stream sends
For a first-pass estimate, use the configured outgoing bitrate and runtime:
- Take the outgoing bitrate in megabits per second.
- Divide by 8 to convert megabits per second to megabytes per second.
- Multiply by the number of seconds streamed.
- Convert the resulting bytes to the unit used by the provider’s billing meter, then apply the actual pricing tiers and eligible allowances.
For scale, YouTube recommends H.264 video bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommended encoder settings, not a measurement of what a particular stream will send. YouTube encoder settings

At 10 Mbps, video payload alone works out to approximately 108 GB over 24 hours using decimal units: 10 megabits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate, not a published YouTube traffic statistic or a provider bill. Actual usage differs. Add audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any redundant feeds; use measured usage for a closer estimate.
Check the whole route, not just the destination
- Identify the sender. Confirm whether the feed leaves a VM, a managed encoder or media service, or a relay. Read that product’s network and service pricing.
- Confirm the destination category. A named destination such as YouTube may receive different treatment from general public-internet egress, but only where the provider explicitly says so for the product and route you use.
- Check region and tier. Internet rates, tiers, and allowances can depend on source geography and account terms. Google Cloud’s Standard Tier must be explicitly specified; Premium Tier is its default.
- Account for every leg. For a third-party relay, CDN, or multistreaming service, check each transfer separately. The encoder’s upload to YouTube is a different leg from YouTube’s distribution to viewers.
- Include non-network costs. Compute, managed encoding, media services, IP addresses, and other resources may be billed separately from egress.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast operationally
A cost estimate does not guarantee that one continuous YouTube broadcast can run indefinitely or will be archived as expected. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a single stream longer than 12 hours or confirm that such a stream can run indefinitely.
