What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. A YouTube playlist is not required to start or keep a 24/7 ambient live broadcast running. A playlist is a collection of videos for viewers to browse; the broadcast itself is a separate live-stream operation. Use a playlist when you have replays or related ambient videos worth grouping, not as a way to keep the live stream online.
What a playlist does—and what it does not do
YouTube defines a playlist as “a collection of videos.” It is a viewer-facing way to arrange videos on your channel, such as past ambient sessions, different scenes, or related long-form mixes. You can create and manage one through YouTube’s playlist tools.
A channel playlist does not originate a live broadcast, extend its duration, or reconnect it if the broadcast stops. YouTube’s live-stream settings cover stream setup, scheduling, metadata, and controls separately from playlist management. A playlist also does not guarantee more recommendations or viewers; YouTube’s documentation supports its organizational use, not a guaranteed discovery boost. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance notes that tags have a minimal role in discovery except for commonly misspelled topics.
Should you make one for your ambient channel?
| Channel situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| You run one persistent ambient stream and have no related uploads or useful replays. | Skip the playlist. It is not a broadcast prerequisite. |
| You publish past sessions, alternate scenes, or related ambient mixes. | Make a clearly named playlist so viewers can browse those videos together. |
| You want a replay archive of a long-running stream. | Plan archive capture separately; a playlist cannot ensure that the stream is recorded or saved. |
YouTube recommends organizing an event’s archive and highlight clips into playlists after the event. That makes a playlist useful for a channel with multiple sessions to revisit, but still optional for going live. See YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.

Plan the replay separately from the live broadcast
Do not assume that a single 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete automatic replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup. It also cautions: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The word “may” matters: this is not a claim that every stream longer than 12 hours is lost, but it means automatic archiving is not a dependable guarantee for a continuous broadcast. Check YouTube’s archive guidance and arrange a suitable recording or archive plan if preserving the full session matters.
Once you have saved replays or other related videos, a public playlist can give viewers a browsable collection. Keep that organizational choice separate from the systems that originate the live stream and preserve its recording.

YouTube Live Control Room supports scheduling and editing stream settings. Scheduled streams may appear in subscribers’ feeds with a “Notify me” option, an audience-notification mechanism separate from a channel playlist. See Manage live stream settings.
Live-stream eligibility and interface requirements can change. YouTube’s current help pages describe requirements including a verified channel, no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. For stream operators: a different kind of “playlist” in HLS
If you are configuring HLS ingestion, YouTube’s technical documentation uses “playlist” to mean a rolling media manifest used by the encoder or transport—not a channel playlist that viewers open. The HLS guide specifies no more than five outstanding segments in that rolling playlist. This transport requirement does not mean that an ambient channel needs a viewer-facing playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
