Neither was a resort. Their histories are documented, but the available sources do not establish what either site looks like today or show that former guests are broadly heartbroken about it.
Two places, not one resort
Discovery Island and River Country were separate attractions with different purposes. D23 describes Discovery Island as a nature preserve on Bay Lake and River Country as a water park beside the lake near Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness—not either attraction—was the nearby resort and campground. D23’s Discovery Island history and its River Country entry distinguish them.
| Place | What it was | Opening | Closure | Setting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery Island | Nature preserve | April 8, 1974, as Treasure Island; renamed Discovery Island in 1977 | April 8, 1999 | Island in Bay Lake |
| River Country | Water park | June 20, 1976 | September 1, 2001, according to D23’s A to Z entry; D23’s retrospective gives September 2001 | Beside Bay Lake, near Fort Wilderness |
What Discovery Island was
Disney opened Treasure Island on April 8, 1974, and renamed it Discovery Island in 1977. The D23 history describes a nature preserve featuring exotic birds and animals, a walk-through aviary, and giant tortoises. Disney curators also helped with a breeding program intended to save Florida dusky sparrows; D23 notes that the last pure dusky sparrow died of old age on the island. The entry does not display a publication year. Read D23’s Discovery Island history.
What River Country was
River Country opened on June 20, 1976, as a water park designed to evoke an old-fashioned swimming hole. D23’s retrospective describes Slippery Slide Falls as two chutes ending in a drop into the Upstream Plunge. Its opening ceremony was attended by First Daughter Susan Ford and more than 700 reporters and their families. D23 says the park’s popularity helped persuade Disney executives to build Typhoon Lagoon, followed later by Blizzard Beach. The D23 retrospective does not display a publication year. What can be said about their current reality?
The official histories establish that both attractions closed, but they do not document the sites’ exact present physical condition. A 2008 planDisney answer said Discovery Island was abandoned and closed to guests at that time, while warning that experiences, policies, prices, and offerings could change. That dated answer is not enough to establish present access rules or current conditions. Read the July 26, 2008 planDisney answer.
The same source set does not verify a broad claim that former guests are heartbroken. Nostalgia for a closed attraction may be a reasonable interpretation, but it is not evidence of a shared or measured reaction. Without an identified former guest’s account, it is more accurate to describe the closure and history than to present “heartbroken” as a fact.

Why the location can be confusing
D23 places Discovery Island in Bay Lake and River Country beside the lake, with Fort Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge nearby. Those neighboring locations can make a loose reference to an “abandoned Disney resort” hard to pin down, but the historical categories remain clear: one was a nature preserve, the other a water park. D23’s Bay Lake entry provides the geographic context.
