Disney World’s October 2024 shutdown for Hurricane Milton was serious, but weather-related closures are not wholly new for the resort. Disney said in a 2023 climate disclosure that Walt Disney World had closed ten times because of hurricane activity since opening in 1971, including eight closures since 2004. The key distinction for visitors is scale: rain or lightning may interrupt individual attractions, while a major storm can trigger early park closures and changes across the resort.
What happened during Hurricane Milton?
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, all four Florida Disney theme parks closed early because of Milton’s forecast track, the Associated Press reported. Disney World, Universal and SeaWorld were closed for at least part of Wednesday and all Thursday. A Friday reopening was planned after operators assessed storm effects; the AP cautioned that some experiences and special events might remain unavailable. This is a historical account of the Milton episode, not a report of current operating status. For live conditions, check Disney’s weather updates.
Milton was not the first major storm to disrupt Orlando-area parks. The AP noted that three storms crossed the area in 2004—Charley, Frances and Jeanne—and that Hurricane Ian brought flooding in 2022. These examples show that severe disruptions are unusual but not unheard of; they do not establish that any particular sequence of closures is unprecedented.
How often has Walt Disney World closed for hurricanes?
In its 2023 CDP climate disclosure, The Walt Disney Company reported that Walt Disney World Resort had closed ten times due to hurricane activity since opening in 1971, with eight of those occurrences since 2004. That is the company’s count as presented in a 2023 disclosure, not a live total updated through 2026.

The same disclosure estimated that Hurricane Irma’s 2017 effects, which included a two-day resort closure, had an approximately $100 million collective operating-income impact. For Hurricane Ian in 2022, Disney estimated an approximately $65 million impact, also associated with a two-day resort closure. These are Disney’s estimates of operating-income impact, not independently measured visitor losses. Disney also noted that financial effects vary according to the characteristics of an event and the businesses affected. Read Disney’s 2023 CDP Climate Change disclosure.
Does rain close rides, parks, or the whole resort?
Ordinary rain and severe storm operations are different situations. A ride or other outdoor attraction may pause temporarily because of rain or lightning, while a park-wide early closure or resort-wide shutdown is a much broader operational decision. In a 2022 planDisney response, a panelist said parks rarely close for ordinary inclement weather, although individual attractions may temporarily close. That is guest guidance from 2022, not a formal guarantee of how any attraction or park will operate.

| Situation | Typical scope described by the sources | What visitors should do |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary rain or lightning | Individual attractions may temporarily close; planDisney’s 2022 guidance said parks rarely close for ordinary inclement weather. | Check current attraction and park information, and use indoor experiences where available. |
| Tropical storm or hurricane threat | Operations can change on a larger scale, including staged early closures, canceled activities and full closure days. | Follow Disney’s live weather updates and local forecasts rather than assuming normal hours or availability. |
Disney’s current Weather Updates & Information page tells guests to check the Central Florida forecast and directs them to updates when tropical storms, hurricanes or other acute weather affect the area. Disney says some Resort experiences may be delayed, rescheduled or canceled because of severe weather.
Why storm closures can happen in stages
Disney’s September 8, 2017 notice about Hurricane Irma illustrates how a shutdown can unfold before the worst weather arrives. The historical notice listed different early closing times for parks and facilities, later scheduled closure days, canceled performances, adjusted services and transportation changes. It is an example of planning during that specific storm, not a statement of Disney’s current standard procedure. Read Disney’s 2017 Irma update.

Staging operations lets the resort respond to a forecast and prepare for changing conditions rather than treating the event as a simple switch from “open” to “closed.” The precise steps depend on current conditions and Disney’s announcements; the Irma schedule should not be used to predict the timing or details of a future closure.
Where to check updates and what to do about reservations
- Check Disney’s weather page: Use Weather Updates & Information for Disney’s acute-weather guidance and updates.
- Check the Central Florida forecast: Disney specifically directs visitors to monitor local forecasts as conditions develop.
- Confirm plans directly with Disney: If a park, event, dining reservation or Resort stay is affected, check the current notice or contact Disney for the terms that apply to that booking.
Disney’s weather page links to hurricane policies, but the current terms for refunds, date changes or hotel cancellations are not established by the information available here. Do not assume that a temporary attraction closure or a park shutdown automatically provides a particular remedy. A 2017 Irma notice offered exchange or refund choices for one canceled Halloween party and said prepaid dining and premium experiences would be canceled and refunded; those storm-specific terms do not establish general policy today.

How to prepare for an ordinary rainy park day
For routine showers—not severe weather—a 2022 planDisney panelist suggested layers, rain ponchos, quick-drying shoes and indoor attractions. A compact poncho may help keep you comfortable in rain, but it is not protection from dangerous storm conditions. Follow official instructions and move to safety when severe weather is approaching.
