What the title means
“Cute aggression” is a colloquial name for reactions such as wanting to squeeze, crush, or bite something irresistibly cute, without intending to hurt it. Researchers place this kind of response within a broader pattern called dimorphous expressions of positive emotion: intense positive feelings can sometimes show up alongside expressions usually associated with negative emotion.
In their 2015 article in Psychological Science, Oriana R. Aragón, Margaret S. Clark, Rebecca L. Dyer, and John A. Bargh write: “Extremely positive experiences, and positive appraisals thereof, produce intense positive emotions that often generate both positive expressions (e.g., smiles) and expressions normatively reserved for negative emotions (e.g., tears).” Their work used cute stimuli to study this broader pattern; it did not examine Stitch or the 2025 movie. Read the 2015 study in Psychological Science.
Why Stitch fits the cute-aggression hook
Stitch is presented as a small, expressive alien whose chaotic behavior sits alongside his growing bond with Lilo. Disney describes the film as a live-action retelling of its 2002 animated classic: a lonely Hawaiian girl befriends a fugitive alien who helps mend her broken family. That mix of unruly energy, vulnerability, and affection makes “adorably overwhelming” a natural way to describe the character’s appeal—but it remains an interpretation, not a measured audience response.

What studies do—and do not—say about the reaction
A 2018 study describes cute aggression as urges to squeeze, crush, or bite cute things without a desire to cause harm. Its findings linked these feelings with being overwhelmed and with caretaking feelings. They do not show that everyone has the reaction, that Stitch causes it, or that the same explanation applies to every person who experiences it. The 2015 researchers proposed that dimorphous expressions may help regulate intense emotion, but described that explanation as preliminary. Cute aggression is therefore a studied emotional expression, not evidence that someone literally wants to hurt a cute animal, toy, or character—and it is not a definitive account of why an individual feels that way.
The film’s reach and where to find it
