If Disney+ will not open, keeps buffering, or shows a black screen on Apple TV, first check whether the problem is limited to Disney+ or affects other apps too. Then force-quit the app, restart Apple TV, update the app and tvOS, and test the network. Reinstall Disney+ only after those checks; investigate the HDMI connection if audio plays but video does not. Disney currently lists Apple TV (4th generation and later) as supported, subject to region and software requirements.
Start with a quick diagnosis
| What you see | Likely area to check | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+ will not open or crashes | App state, app update, or tvOS | Force-quit Disney+, then restart Apple TV. |
| Login fails | MyDisney credentials, account status, or Disney service | Try signing in on a phone or computer. |
| Blank screen or endless spinner | App state, network, or video connection | Restart Apple TV; if other apps display normally, test Disney+ on another device. |
| Other apps also buffer or fail | Network, Apple TV, or television setup | Test another device on the same network, then restart network equipment. |
| Audio plays but picture is black | HDMI/HDCP connection, receiver, or HDR setting | Connect Apple TV directly to the television and try another HDMI input. |
| An error code appears | Could be compatibility, authentication, network, or service-related | Record the exact code and check Disney’s support guidance; a code is not always a unique diagnosis. |
| Disney+ is missing from the App Store | Apple TV model, software, store region, or local availability | Check the model and region before resetting anything. |
| AirPlay fails but the app works | AirPlay requirements or plan limitation | Play directly from the Disney+ app on Apple TV. |
For an outage check, consult Disney’s streaming troubleshooting guidance and try Disney+ on a second device. Apple’s System Status page covers Apple services, not necessarily Disney+. Apple also recommends trying another device on the same connection and contacting your internet provider if streaming fails across devices (Apple streaming troubleshooting).
- If Disney+ fails on several devices and networks, investigate the account or contact Disney.
- If it fails only on one Apple TV, focus on the app, tvOS, local connection, or HDMI chain.
- If every app fails on Apple TV, troubleshoot the network or Apple TV before treating it as a Disney+ problem.
Confirm the Apple TV can run Disney+
Disney’s current device documentation lists Apple TV (4th generation and later), subject to regional availability and software requirements (Disney+ supported devices). Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K are the supported families relevant to most current users. A third-generation or older model is not made compatible by reinstalling an app that is unavailable for it.
To identify the hardware, open Settings > General > About. The Apple TV box is hardware; the Apple TV app is Apple’s own streaming app; Disney+ is a separate service and app. Seeing Disney content or a Disney+ option in another interface does not itself establish that you have an active Disney+ subscription.

- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Force-quit Disney+ and reopen it
- Press the TV button twice on the Siri Remote to open the app switcher.
- Swipe to highlight Disney+.
- Swipe upward on the clickpad or touch surface to close the app.
- Return to the Home Screen and open Disney+ again.
This closes the running app; it does not clear a cache. Apple TV does not provide the same per-app cache-clearing control used by some other TV platforms. If the app switcher does not open or the interface is unresponsive, move on to a full restart rather than repeatedly reopening the frozen app. Disney’s guidance for clearing app data on Apple TV is to uninstall and reinstall Disney+ (Disney+ cache and data guidance).
Restart Apple TV
Restart from Settings
Go to Settings > System > Restart, then wait for Apple TV to boot before opening Disney+.
Power-cycle the device
If the interface is frozen, unplug Apple TV from power, wait briefly, reconnect it, and let it start fully. A restart preserves apps, accounts, and settings; it is not a factory reset. Apple includes turning a streaming device off and back on among its playback troubleshooting steps (Apple streaming troubleshooting).
Update tvOS and the Disney+ app separately
Check for a tvOS update
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Software Updates.
- Choose Update Software.
- If an update is available, select Download and Install and keep Apple TV connected to power until it finishes.
Automatic updates are available under Settings > System > Software Updates > Automatically Update. Menu wording may vary slightly by tvOS version. Do not unplug Apple TV during an update. See Apple’s Apple TV update instructions.

Check for a Disney+ update
App updates and tvOS updates are separate: either can be current while the other is not. Automatic app updates are controlled under Settings > Apps > Automatically Update Apps. To check manually, open the App Store, search for Disney+, open its listing, and install an update if one is offered. Apple documents app settings in its Apple TV 4K app settings guide.
Test and restart the network
Check whether another streaming app works on Apple TV. Also try Disney+ on a phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi. If practical, compare with Ethernet or another network. A speed test is only one clue: congestion, wireless interference, packet loss, or other connection problems can disrupt playback even when a speed result looks adequate. Apple cites 8 Mbit/s or faster for HD streaming in its own guidance; that figure is not a universal Disney+ minimum for every resolution, plan, or household setup (Apple streaming troubleshooting).
- Close Disney+ and turn off or unplug Apple TV.
- Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
- Restart the modem, then the router.
- Wait until the internet connection is restored, then restart Apple TV.
- Open Disney+ and test playback.
This follows the sequence in Disney’s streaming troubleshooting guidance. If other people or devices are using substantial bandwidth, pause large downloads, cloud backups, or gaming temporarily to compare results.
Delete and reinstall Disney+
If force-quitting, restarting, and updating have not helped, reinstalling can remove app data that a restart leaves behind. On the Home Screen, highlight Disney+ and press and hold the clickpad or touch surface. Select Delete App, then Delete rather than Offload. If the remote or tvOS presents a different menu, use its delete command; Disney’s older instructions describe pressing Play/Pause and selecting Delete.

- Open the App Store and search for Disney+.
- Reinstall the app.
- Open it and sign in again.
Delete removes the app and its data; Offload removes the app but retains its data. Apple describes both options in its Apple TV app installation and deletion guide; Disney also provides uninstall and reinstall instructions. Reinstalling does not cancel a subscription, but you may need to sign in again. It will not fix a Disney-side outage or an account problem.
Check the account, sign-in, and billing provider
If the app opens but will not authenticate, try signing into Disney+ on a phone or computer. Confirm the email and password for the MyDisney login and verify that the subscription is active. Disney notes that Disney+ login details are connected to the MyDisney login, so changing credentials can affect the wider account (Disney+ app and login guidance).
- Check for an expired subscription, failed payment, pause, or account notice.
- If you subscribed through Apple, a carrier, or a bundle partner, verify billing with that provider; billing management and Disney playback support may be separate.
- A plan entitlement does not automatically sign the Apple TV into the account.
- Do not subscribe again until you have confirmed the existing account and billing status, to avoid paying twice.
If web sign-in works but Apple TV does not, sign out of the app if that option is available, restart or reinstall it, and use the current on-screen sign-in method. Record the exact message if the problem persists. For errors that specifically mention device or simultaneous-stream limits, follow the instructions shown in the account or Disney support rather than assuming every error code means the same thing.

If Disney+ audio plays while video is black, or only 4K/HDR titles fail, check the signal path before repeatedly reinstalling the app. Receivers, soundbars, HDMI switches, splitters, and cables can affect the connection between Apple TV and the television. Disney advises that connected components, including HDMI cables, need to support high-bandwidth digital content for the best streaming experience (Disney streaming troubleshooting).

- Try another HDMI input and, if available, a known-good cable.
- Temporarily simplify the Apple TV video format or turn off advanced HDR/Dolby Vision output to test playback.
- Compare a non-HDR title with an HDR title.
- If direct connection works, reconnect the receiver or switch and test each part of the chain.
A cable purchase is not a general Disney+ fix. Consider replacing a cable only when a known-good comparison, visible damage, intermittent signal loss, or a 4K/HDR-specific failure points to it. If every app has the same display problem, the cause is less likely to be Disney+ alone.
If you are using AirPlay instead of the Disney+ app
AirPlay is a separate route from native Disney+ playback. Disney lists Apple TV 4th generation or later running tvOS 16 or later among supported AirPlay devices, and currently notes that Disney+ plans with ads may not support AirPlay because of a technical issue; availability can depend on plan and region (Disney+ AirPlay device guidance).
- Use the native Disney+ app on Apple TV when available.
- Check that the iPhone or iPad and Apple TV are on the same network.
- If native playback works but AirPlay does not, that points toward the AirPlay route or its requirements rather than proving the account or Apple TV is broken.
Reset Apple TV only as a last resort
A factory reset is destructive, not a routine cache-clearing step. Use it only if Disney+ still fails after restart, updates, network tests, and reinstall, particularly if other system functions are also unreliable or Apple Support recommends it. Be prepared to set up the device and accounts again.
- Go to Settings > System > Reset.
- Choose Reset or Reset and Update.
Reset erases accounts, configuration, and other information. Reset and Update also installs the latest software and requires an internet connection. See Apple’s reset and restore instructions.
Know when to contact Disney, Apple, or your internet provider
Contact Disney+
- Sign-in or subscription problems occur on multiple supported devices.
- Disney+ fails on multiple devices or networks while other services work.
- A Disney-specific message persists after reinstalling and testing the connection.
Contact Apple
- Several apps fail, or Apple TV has system-wide crashes.
- Apple TV cannot update, restart, or connect reliably.
- Display failures continue across apps after testing the television connection.
Contact your internet provider
- Streaming fails across multiple devices on the home connection.
- Restarting equipment does not restore a reliable connection, while another network works.
When asking for help, note the Apple TV model, tvOS version, Disney+ app version if available, exact error text, whether other apps work, and whether the issue reproduces on another device or network. Those details narrow down whether the next step belongs to Disney, Apple, or the provider.
