Disney+ did restore Dolby Vision and 3D support in parts of Europe in March 2026, but that is no longer a reliable description of the service. After a second patent-court development, the formats were reported removed again in 11 countries in June. By August, 4K had begun returning on some devices, but there was no general return of HDR or Dolby Vision. This status was checked on August 18, 2026.
The short answer
- March restoration: Yes. Disney confirmed that Dolby Vision and 3D support had been restored after litigation-related changes.
- Current status: Not universally restored. June reports said Dolby Vision and 3D were removed again in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and Sweden.
- 4K: Reports in early August described a partial return on selected devices in affected markets.
- HDR and Dolby Vision: The partial 4K return did not amount to a general HDR or Dolby Vision restoration.
- 3D: Disney+ 3D is for Apple Vision Pro, not ordinary 3D televisions, and the June restrictions affected its availability too.
These are reported country and rollout conditions, not a guarantee that every title, device or account behaves identically. Disney says availability can vary by location and format depends on the title and playback device. Check the title itself before assuming a feature is available.
What changed, and when

The March news was real, but it described a moment in a changing dispute—not a permanent Europe-wide fix. Contemporary March coverage reported the restoration and Disney’s explanation of litigation-related changes (Thurrott; Europa Press). Later reporting documented the June removals (HDTVTest) and the limited August 4K return (TechRadar; What Hi-Fi?).
Countries named in reports of the June restrictions
The reported 11-country group is:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Netherlands
- Portugal
- Romania
- Sweden
Do not read this as a statement that all of Europe has one catalogue or technical policy. The United Kingdom appeared in some March coverage, but it was not included in the 11-country list cited by later June reports. Other European countries outside that list should not be presumed to have the same restriction—or the same restoration—without checking locally. Disney’s location guidance says availability can differ by country and streaming location. Germany was already a particular focus of the original legal dispute, so its experience should not be inferred from neighboring markets.

Why the formats disappeared
The dispute involves InterDigital, a technology company that licenses patents used in video and communications technologies. Disney said litigation before a European patent court required changes to Dolby Vision and 3D availability. Reporting connected the restrictions to patent litigation over video-encoding techniques, including HEVC-related technology, and court proceedings involving the Mannheim division of the Unified Patent Court.
That does not establish the precise licensing terms, the amount at issue, whether the companies settled, or the technical workaround Disney may use. Nor does it justify treating the legal merits as settled. The practical point for subscribers is narrower: court-related restrictions have coincided with repeated changes in format availability across specific markets.

4K, HDR and Dolby Vision are not interchangeable
A 4K stream describes resolution. HDR describes a wider range of brightness and color presentation; HDR10 and Dolby Vision are distinct HDR formats. A service can restore 4K without restoring HDR, and a title can be offered in HDR without Dolby Vision. That is why reports of 4K returning in August do not mean the previous premium picture experience has returned.

- HDR10+: Do not treat it as a format Disney removed in Europe: Disney reportedly clarified in March that HDR10+ had not previously been available there.
- 3D: A separate presentation format. Disney’s help documentation identifies Apple Vision Pro as the platform for its 3D content.
Disney’s video-quality help page says 4K UHD and HDR formats depend on the title and device, and that the service automatically selects the highest quality supported. That automatic selection cannot override regional restrictions, missing title support or a device-chain limitation.

What Disney+ Premium does—and does not—guarantee
Premium is the Disney+ plan associated with the service’s highest video and audio capabilities where supported. It is not a promise that every title streams in 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision in every country. The result can depend on your country, plan, title, app, device, network and connected equipment. A compatible Dolby Vision television alone cannot restore a format the service is not delivering in your market.
For 3D, the distinction is more direct: Disney’s help material says selected 3D content is available only on Apple Vision Pro, not a conventional 3D TV. Buying a headset also cannot override a regional restriction. How to check what your account can play
- Open Disney+ while in the country whose availability you want to check.
- Choose a title known to have offered Dolby Vision or 3D, rather than relying on a random catalogue title.
- Open the title’s Details tab (or its versions information) and look for the available format labels, such as 4K UHD, HDR or Dolby Vision.
- On Apple Vision Pro, open Disney+ and look for the 3D Collection. Open a known 3D title and check whether its 3D version is offered or launches.
- Confirm you are using the intended regional account and are not routing through a VPN or unusual network location.
- If the result is unclear, test the same title and account on another supported device. The reported 4K restoration was device-specific in some cases.
A Premium subscription, compatible hardware and a supported title are necessary for the highest formats, but they may still be insufficient in a restricted country. Format badges can also lag during phased changes; if the label and actual playback seem inconsistent, restart the app and device, update their software, and test again.
If a format you expect is missing
Work through these checks before replacing hardware:

- Verify that your plan supports the desired quality and that the title offers it.
- Update the Disney+ app and playback-device software, then restart both.
- Test directly on the television or streaming device. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, HDMI switch or other intermediary, since the HDMI chain can affect format negotiation.
- Try a second compatible device to distinguish a device issue from a country or account limitation.
- Check whether your country is among the 11 markets named in June coverage, and consult Disney’s title-level details and location guidance for the latest availability.
- If Disney documents the format for your location and title but it remains absent on supported equipment, contact Disney support.
A VPN is not a sound fix: it can create location-verification or terms-of-service problems and does not resolve the underlying court-related restriction.
Options if premium picture quality is the priority
If you are paying chiefly for Dolby Vision, HDR or Disney+ 3D, first verify availability for your own country and device rather than buying new hardware. A new television, streaming box or Vision Pro headset cannot make a regionally unavailable Disney+ format appear.
Other streaming services—including Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Max—may offer Dolby Vision for particular titles and devices, but catalogues, plans and country support differ. Check the specific title and format in your region. A digital rental or purchase can be another option for a particular film, but availability is also title- and country-specific.

The trade-offs are the upfront cost of a player and discs, storage, and the fact that not every Disney title has a 4K disc release in every country.
Bottom line for European subscribers
Disney’s March 2026 Dolby Vision and 3D restoration happened, but the headline is now historical. June reports said both formats were removed again in 11 European countries, and the early-August return of 4K on some devices did not establish a general return of HDR or Dolby Vision. Check your title’s format details and your local availability; Premium and compatible equipment do not guarantee a legally restricted format.
