Disney and DIRECTV’s 2024 Carriage Dispute: What Happened and When Channels Returned

Disney and DIRECTV’s 2024 carriage dispute interrupted ESPN and other Disney channels during a major sports stretch. The channels returned September 14; the public announcement described an agreement in principle.

Disney-owned channels went dark on DIRECTV on September 1, 2024, just as college football began and the NFL season approached. The blackout ended on September 14, when the companies announced an agreement in principle and said the channels had been restored. The headline describes that 2024 standoff—not a current blackout.

What happened between Disney and DIRECTV?

The companies failed to reach a new distribution agreement before their previous arrangement expired. On September 1, Disney programming disappeared from DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM, and U-verse. The Los Angeles Times reported that nearly 11 million customer homes were affected at the time.

The timing made the dispute especially visible: ESPN was carrying the U.S. Open and college football’s opening weekend, with the NFL season due to begin days later. The first Monday Night Football game of the 2024 season, 49ers versus Jets, was scheduled for September 9.

Which channels and viewers were affected?

The blackout covered ESPN and other ESPN networks, Disney-owned ABC stations, Disney Channel and other Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic. The ABC impact should not be read as a blackout of every ABC affiliate: the contemporary reporting identified Disney-owned stations, not all independently owned affiliates.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The practical effect depended on a viewer’s channel lineup and location. Losing ESPN meant losing access to its cable networks through DIRECTV during the dispute; the event could still have other distribution options, but availability depended on the event’s rights and the viewer’s service.

Why did the companies fail to agree?

The dispute involved carriage fees and contract terms, including package flexibility and how Disney’s streaming services would be distributed. The companies gave sharply different accounts of what was at stake; their public statements establish their positions, not which side was objectively right.

Disney’s position

Disney said it sought market-based rates that reflected the value and cost of its programming. On September 1, Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said: “DirecTV chose to deny millions of subscribers access to our content just as we head into the final week of the US Open and gear up for college football and the opening of the NFL season.”

In a September 4 statement, Disney said it believed there was a path to a “fair and flexible agreement.” It also said, citing Nielsen, that more than 90% of DIRECTV households watched Disney linear programming each month in 2023. That figure was Disney’s account of Nielsen data, not an independently verified measure here.

DIRECTV’s position

DIRECTV argued for more choice in how customers could buy channels and objected to Disney’s proposed terms. Chief content officer Rob Thun told the Los Angeles Times: “They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers — making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price.”

DIRECTV also said it would provide a $30 bill credit during the temporary dispute. That was a 2024 response, not a current offer.

How the sports calendar raised the stakes

The blackout overlapped with the U.S. Open and the first weekend of college football, then continued into the start of the NFL season. On September 10, DIRECTV said a temporary return of Disney channels would benefit customers ahead of the ABC Emmy broadcast and football games on ABC and ESPN.

The timing made the stakes for viewers immediate, but it does not by itself show that either company deliberately timed the contract expiration to gain leverage.

When did ESPN and Disney channels return?

Disney and DIRECTV announced an agreement in principle on September 14, 2024, and said all Disney linear channels had been restored to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM, and U-verse customers. So, to answer the common questions: DIRECTV did lose access to ESPN during the 2024 dispute, and the channels came back on September 14, 2024.

The companies described the announced deal as a framework for continued carriage of Disney’s entertainment, sports, and news portfolio. It also included opportunities for genre-specific sports, entertainment, and kids-and-family options; Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ in select packages and on an a-la-carte basis; and rights for DIRECTV to distribute ESPN’s then-upcoming flagship direct-to-consumer service when it launched.

Those were announced terms in principle, not a complete public contract. The public sources establish restoration and the announcement, but do not confirm whether the final multi-year contract was later executed or what its current terms are. The 2024 announcement also does not establish present package availability, event rights, or prices for the named streaming services.

What should viewers check during a future blackout?

For a current service question, check the viewer’s platform, market, and current channel lineup. During any future carriage dispute, compare the specific event and channel—not just the service brand—and verify:

  • Whether the service carries the channel and the particular live event.
  • Whether it is available in the viewer’s market and on the viewer’s platform.
  • Its current subscription cost and eligibility requirements.
  • Whether it provides a live linear channel or only selected on-demand programming.

An over-the-air antenna may receive a local broadcast station in some markets, but it does not replace ESPN’s cable networks. A streaming service named in a carriage announcement should not be assumed to carry a particular event without checking that event’s current rights and availability.
