Discord Server Subscriptions let eligible U.S.-based server owners offer recurring paid memberships with perks such as subscriber-only channels, roles and premium emoji. To set one up, the owner starts in the Discord Developers Portal, enables monetization, then creates one to three subscription tiers in the server’s settings. Discord’s advertised 90/10 revenue split is not the creator’s final take-home: payment-processing and other fees may also be deducted.
What Discord Server Subscriptions offer
Server Subscriptions are monthly memberships that a server can sell to its members. Depending on how the owner configures the offer, subscribers can receive access to selected premium channels or to an entire members-only server, along with tier-specific roles, emoji and other stated perks. A server can have one to three paid tiers. Discord’s Server Shop guide explains the current setup and available features.
They are different from Server Products, which are one-time purchases such as downloadable files or Premium Roles. Discord describes Server Products as a beta feature for a select group of servers; they are not the recurring membership feature covered here.

Discord’s original announcement described a price range, but the current Creator Support guide does not publish a confirmed present-day range. Check the tier editor for the prices available to your server rather than relying on the 2022 announcement’s limits.

Who can enable subscriptions
Only the server owner can enable monetization. Administrators can help manage some subscription details, but the owner retains control of payment and payout information. Discord also requires the owner to meet eligibility requirements, including:
- Be at least 18 and have a Discord account in good standing.
- Have a verified email address and two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled.
- Have no safety violation in the previous 30 days, no suspicious safety, abuse or fraud flag, and no outstanding Discord charges.
- Be based in the United States and be able to provide Stripe with a U.S.-based bank account and U.S. identification document.
- Run a server that complies with Stripe’s prohibited and restricted-business rules.
The server itself must have Community enabled and multifactor authentication enabled for moderation actions. It cannot be primarily built around NSFW content. Under Discord’s Monetization Policy, most of its membership and activity must not consist of bots or inactive accounts; it must be in good standing and cannot have an unapproved ownership transfer in the previous 30 days. Buying or selling a server also requires Discord’s approval.
How to enable monetization and create tiers
- Open the Discord Developers Portal and log in.
- Select Get Started, then choose Servers in the left panel.
- Select the server and choose Enable Monetization from its left panel. Discord opens the monetization page in the app in a browser tab.
- Agree to the Monetization Terms and Server Monetization Policy, then select Start Earning.
- Complete the setup, including selecting Create Team to create the required team of trusted server members.
After monetization is enabled, open Server Subscriptions in the server’s settings. Under Basic Info, choose whether only selected channels are exclusive or the whole server requires a paid membership. Under Tiers, create one to three paid tiers and define the perks for each. The Emoji area lets you add Premium Emoji. There is no slash command for creating subscriptions; configuration is done in Discord’s interface.

Before publishing, make sure the tier descriptions accurately state what members get, plus any limitations or eligibility conditions. Discord’s Monetization Terms require accurate offer descriptions. If you materially remove or change promised perks, the terms require a refund or, for a subscription, notice and a chance for members to cancel or change their membership before the change takes effect.
What members see when they subscribe
Members see Server Subscription at the top of the server’s channel list. Selecting it opens a landing page with the available tiers, prices and included perks. The member chooses a tier and payment method, completes checkout, and receives a welcome message describing the purchased benefits. Members manage or cancel their membership at User Settings > Subscriptions > Manage Membership, where they can see the server, cost and billing or renewal date. Selecting Cancel Subscription stops the next renewal. See Discord’s member guide for details.
Fees: why a 90/10 split is not the net payout
Discord describes the creator-platform split as 90% to the creator and 10% to Discord. That does not mean creators necessarily receive 90% of a payment after all deductions. The Monetization Terms also list payment-processing fees for Server Subscriptions:

*The iOS processing fee is listed in Discord’s terms. Additional transaction deductions can include currency conversion, bank, fraud, refund or chargeback fees. Discord may raise the customer’s price for mobile purchases to account for mobile-store processing fees. For that reason, a tier’s listed price is not enough by itself to determine a creator’s final proceeds.
Payout timing and minimums
Creators must create an account with the third-party payout provider offered through Discord; a payout cannot be made until that provider provisions the account. Under the Monetization Terms, an eligible payout is due within 45 days after the end of the applicable calendar month. The first payout requires a balance of at least $100. After the first payout, the minimum is $25. Earnings below the applicable threshold roll forward for later reviews.
Discord can delay or hold payouts for tax-information requirements, refunds, chargebacks, suspected fraud or policy violations. A high volume of chargebacks can also affect payouts, and refunds or chargebacks may leave a creator owing Discord more than the amount otherwise scheduled to be paid. Check status in Server Settings > Payments, under Premium Memberships.

Trials and premium emoji
Free Trials are set separately for each tier: edit the tier and turn on Free Trials for this tier. The default duration is one week; the other available duration is one day. You can set the trial quantity to 10, 25, 50, 100 or unlimited (the default). A member who does not already have a payment method on file must enter one to start a trial. Unless they cancel before it ends, the trial converts to a paid monthly subscription and charges the default payment method.
Trials are not a way to give a free month to one hand-picked person. Discord’s documented workaround is to grant that person channel access manually, then remove it manually if needed.
A server can add up to 25 additional custom emoji as Premium Emoji. Subscribers can use animated Premium Emoji without Nitro inside the server they subscribe to; using those premium emoji outside that server requires Nitro.
Important limitations and common problems
- Non-subscribers can still see premium channels in the channel list. Discord currently does not let owners hide inaccessible Server Subscription channels from regular members. Move premium channels lower in the list, or use ordinary channel permissions and tier roles manually instead of subscription gating.
- Moderators can be given access without subscribing. Add their regular roles in the channel’s permission settings. This is separate from subscription gating.
- Leaving the server stops renewal. If a member leaves, is kicked or is banned, the subscription is canceled and will not auto-renew. A member who voluntarily leaves and rejoins retains perks and roles for the remainder of the already-paid month.
- 2FA cannot be removed after tiers are published. Discord’s Monetization Policy says it must remain enabled once the account has published server subscription tiers.
- Android and iOS purchases differ. Members can buy a subscription in Discord’s iOS app, where prices are higher to account for Apple’s additional fee. iOS members cannot upgrade or downgrade mid-cycle; they must cancel, wait for the current subscription to end, then buy the new tier. Server Subscriptions cannot be purchased through Android. An iOS subscription has a 28-day grace period after a failed renewal payment; if payment is not fixed within that period, the subscription and related features end.
- Refunds are not solely the owner’s decision. Members are told to contact the server owner first. If unresolved, they can contact Discord through its billing process and select Billing, then Server Subscription under Type of Billing Issue. Discord’s Refund Policy applies, and mobile purchases may also be subject to the relevant app store’s refund process.
How to disable Server Subscriptions
Discord requires that the server have no active subscribers, all tiers be deleted (including draft and archived tiers), and no payout be pending before subscriptions can be fully disabled. Then right-click the server, select Server Subscriptions, open Payment, and select the red Disable Server Subscriptions button. Enter the requested 2FA code. After successful verification, the page changes to Start Earning.
What a server must not sell
Discord’s Monetization Policy bars a range of offerings, including sexually explicit content, online dating, unlicensed use of another rights holder’s intellectual property, partisan political activity, gambling and gambling-adjacent activity, weapons or explosives, and financial scams or deceptive financial practices. It also restricts charity as the stated purpose of monetization, third-party marketing or advertising as the primary purpose, promotion of alcohol, tobacco or drugs, unsafe health practices, malware or phishing, and graphic, dangerous, misleading, excessively violent or vulgar content.
