A disco ball, also called a mirror ball, is a sphere covered with small reflective facets. Shine a directed light at it and the facets send reflections in many directions; rotate the ball and the bright spots move across the room.
How does a disco ball work?
Each small facet acts like a plane mirror. Because the facets point in different directions, they reflect incoming light across different parts of the room. When the sphere turns, the angles change, so the reflected spots travel over walls, floors and ceilings. The ball does not create light; it redirects light from a separate source. What makes up the ball?
Construction varies. One documented example is a circa-1970 ball in the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s collection: hundreds of square glass mirrors attached to a Styrofoam sphere, with metal hanging hardware. That describes this artifact, not every mirror ball. The museum’s collection record gives its materials and dimensions.
What do you need to create the effect?
You need a mirror ball and a directed light source aimed at it. A motor can turn the ball, making the reflections move; a stationary ball still reflects light, but its pattern does not travel because of rotation. A motorized effect and a passive ball illuminated by a separate spotlight are different setups, so check what a product listing actually includes.

There is no universal size, rotation speed, light, mounting method or safe load established for all balls and venues. Before hanging one, check the manufacturer’s specifications and the venue’s requirements for the ball, motor, hardware and electrical setup. Do not assume that a ceiling, hook or motor is suitable based on the ball’s appearance alone.
How did mirror balls enter dance and performance culture?
Early reported references
Science Centre Singapore reports that the earliest mention it found was in an 1897 issue of The Electrical Worker, which described a ballroom with a “mirrored ball.” The same explainer says Louis Bernard Woeste patented a commercial “myriad reflector” in 1917. These are dates reported by the explainer; they do not establish a single inventor or definitive origin for every form of mirror ball. Read its account of the history and optical effect.

A documented Bronx party artifact
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture identifies a circa-1970 mirror ball as having been used at hip-hop parties thrown by DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy Campbell in the rec room of their apartment complex at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. The museum lists the maker as unknown.
This particular object is 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, 16 3/4 inches (42.5 cm) tall including its hardware, and 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall without it. Those are artifact measurements, not standard product dimensions. The NMAAHC catalog record documents the object; a Smithsonian Learning Lab resource repeats catalog information.

An immersive artwork, not just a dance-floor fixture
Mirror balls also became part of experimental visual art. MoMA documents Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver’s Cinematic Illumination (1968–69), an immersive event conceived for Tokyo discotheque Killer Joe’s. The installation combined a disco ball with 1,350 black-and-white slides, 108 color gels and sound; MoMA describes a 114:45-minute loop. Craft and regional legacy

What should you check when choosing a disco ball?
Product names alone do not tell you whether a setup will work in your room. Compare the actual listing and venue requirements for the details that affect installation and the light effect:
- Ball diameter and surface material.
- Whether a motor, mounting hardware or light source is included.
- Motor speed and controls, if it is motorized.
- How it hangs and the rated load of the ball, motor and mounting arrangement.
- Whether the light source is suitable for illuminating the ball.
- Whether the product is intended for indoor or event use.
These are specification checks, not universal recommendations: the right configuration depends on the particular product and venue.
