On September 10, 2024, Disney offered to restore ABC-owned stations on DIRECTV for a limited window around that night’s U.S. presidential debate. DIRECTV rejected that arrangement and proposed restoring all Disney-owned channels through September 16 instead. Disney rejected DIRECTV’s counteroffer.
Who rejected which offer?
The exchange involved two proposals, not a simple refusal to bring ABC back. DIRECTV said it would restore ABC as part of a broader temporary return of Disney’s channels, but not under Disney’s ABC-only terms. The companies’ accounts of the offers and responses are set out in DIRECTV’s September 10 statement; a Yahoo News report also covered the exchange.

What Disney offered: ABC for the debate
Disney’s proposal covered ABC-owned broadcast stations for roughly the three-hour debate window, according to DIRECTV. It was not a proposal to return ESPN, Disney Channel, FX, Freeform, National Geographic, or the rest of Disney’s linear lineup. Because ABC is delivered through local stations, the channel and station a viewer receives can vary by market.
Why DIRECTV turned down that limited return
DIRECTV said that briefly restoring ABC and then removing it again after the debate would confuse customers. It also argued that the arrangement would leave the wider carriage dispute unresolved and that viewers could watch the debate on other networks. Those were DIRECTV’s stated reasons, not an independent finding about how customers would respond.
DIRECTV named CBS, NBC, FOX, C-SPAN, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and PBS as other places to watch. That list was the company’s guidance; it does not establish that every viewer had every listed channel in their package or local market.
DIRECTV’s counteroffer covered all Disney channels
DIRECTV proposed restoring Disney’s full affected channel portfolio across DIRECTV platforms through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Monday, September 16. The extension would have covered the debate, the September 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, and college and professional football programming, as well as other Disney networks involved in the blackout.

The broader offer could have restored more programming for several days, rather than ABC for a few hours. But it remained temporary and depended on Disney agreeing to return its full portfolio under DIRECTV’s proposed terms. Disney declined that counteroffer, according to DIRECTV’s account.
Why Disney programming had gone dark
The companies were negotiating a carriage agreement, the contract that governs a distributor’s right to carry a programmer’s channels. When negotiations do not produce a renewal or extension, a programmer may withdraw channels from the distributor. During this 2024 dispute, reports listed ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPN News, FX, Disney Channel, and other networks among the affected services; the exact lineup was specific to that dispute, not a permanent DIRECTV channel list. The dispute concerned linear television channels carried by DIRECTV. Those channels should not be conflated with separate direct-to-consumer services: access to Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ is not automatically the same as having an ABC station or ESPN network in a pay-TV channel guide. DIRECTV announced a $30 bill credit in connection with the 2024 disruption. That was a historical offer, not a statement of current eligibility or a standing credit. For present-day disruption information, DIRECTV directs customers to its TV Promise tool; its support page explains that customers can check by selecting their service and entering a ZIP code. It says an accepted credit may take up to two billing cycles to appear. Terms and availability can depend on service and location.

How the dispute ended
On September 14, 2024, the companies announced an agreement in principle and restored Disney’s linear networks to DIRECTV satellite, DIRECTV STREAM, and U-verse customers while they finalized a longer-term contract. Disney’s announcement also described plans for more flexible genre-specific options and access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ offerings. The agreement and restoration are described in Disney’s announcement. This sequence makes the September 10 headline historical, not evidence of a present-day blackout.
