Yes. A DigitalOcean Droplet can run an encoder or relay that sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live, but the right server size depends on whether it only forwards an already encoded video or also encodes or transcodes it. There is no published universal minimum size for this use. Start with a test, measure resource use and stream health, and confirm your account’s available regions and billing details before relying on it around the clock.
Can I use a DigitalOcean VPS for YouTube Live?
Yes. A Droplet is a cloud virtual machine: you install or run streaming software on it, provide YouTube’s stream URL and private stream key, and keep the software running. Your own computer and home connection do not need to remain online, but the Droplet, its network connection, and the streaming process do.
The workload matters. A relay that forwards a stream already encoded elsewhere is not the same as a server that encodes or transcodes video. DigitalOcean describes dedicated-CPU Droplets as suited to steady workloads and CPU-optimized Droplets as suited to CPU-bound work, including video and live-streaming work. Those descriptions are not a guaranteed size recommendation for a particular stream. Measure CPU, memory, network use, and YouTube stream health during a realistic test before settling on a plan.
This guide applies to India-based creators as well as other regions. The official DigitalOcean and YouTube guidance cited here is general; it does not establish India-specific encoder settings, Droplet-region availability, latency, or tax treatment. Check the region selector while creating a Droplet and the billing details shown in your own DigitalOcean account.

How to stream 24/7 on YouTube using a VPS
1. Create and secure the Droplet
- Choose a current Ubuntu LTS image. DigitalOcean’s production setup guide gives Ubuntu 24.04 as an example.
- Add your SSH public key during creation. Set up a non-root account with sudo privileges, then use that account for routine administration rather than signing in as root.
- Attach a Cloud Firewall. At first, allow inbound SSH from the addresses you need for administration and block other unnecessary inbound services. Keep outbound access available for operating-system updates and the connection to YouTube’s ingest service.
- Enable monitoring. Choose backups according to how quickly you need to recover the server and its configuration. DigitalOcean also recommends considering VPC and IPv6 as part of production setup; whether you need them depends on your deployment.
DigitalOcean documents cloud-init user data as an option for automating first-boot setup, including users, applications, and SSH configuration. Treat automation as a convenience to test, not as a substitute for checking that the server is secured and works after reboot.
2. Decide whether to relay or encode
Before selecting a plan, decide where the video will be encoded. If the Droplet only relays a feed encoded elsewhere, its CPU demands can be different from those of a Droplet encoding or transcoding the video itself. For continuous encoding, compare shared and dedicated CPU options against your measured workload; DigitalOcean identifies CPU-optimized Droplets as an option for CPU-bound video work. No plan label guarantees a particular resolution or frame rate.
Check memory, storage, and network capacity for your actual software and workflow. DigitalOcean says non-GPU Droplets generally have a network-throughput maximum of 2 Gbps, with a higher limit for Premium CPU Droplets. These are ceilings, not guarantees of stream quality or a recommendation for the size you need.

3. Enable YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Confirm the channel is eligible before building the workflow. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Enter those credentials in the encoder or relay configuration. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start a test and confirm that the video appears in YouTube’s preview and that stream health is acceptable before making the broadcast public or unattended.
4. Set the encoder for the chosen format
Use YouTube’s settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select. The H.264 figures below are specific to the listed modes; they should not be reused as AV1 or H.265 recommendations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| H.264 mode | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Use the settings for your selected codec and mode rather than assuming that one bitrate fits every resolution, frame rate, or codec.
Allow network headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% above the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. If you do not run a backup stream, size the connection for the actual outgoing feed and leave room for overhead and variation; a nominal network ceiling is not the same as usable, stable upload capacity.

5. Estimate outbound transfer before committing
Continuous streaming can consume substantial outbound data. A useful arithmetic estimate is Mbps Ă— 0.45 Ă— hours for decimal gigabytes before protocol overhead: a constant 1 Mbps for 24 hours is about 10.8 GB per day. Multiply by the combined outgoing bitrate if you send primary and backup feeds, then estimate the hours and days you expect to run.
DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation says inbound transfer is free and that outbound transfer beyond the included allowance costs $0.01 per GiB; included transfer is pooled across the team. Check the transfer allowance for the plan you choose and monitor projected usage in billing. Actual transfer depends on bitrate, runtime, protocol overhead, and any additional streams, so do not treat the arithmetic estimate as an account bill.
6. Supervise, monitor, and test recovery
A 24/7 setup needs more than an encoder that starts once. Configure process supervision and reconnect behavior in your chosen implementation, then test both deliberately. DigitalOcean and YouTube’s cited documentation does not validate a particular FFmpeg, Docker, systemd, or relay configuration, so do not assume an example configuration is production-ready without testing it on your own Droplet.

- Watch CPU, memory, outbound transfer, and the encoder or relay process.
- Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators during setup and after changes.
- Test what happens when the process exits, the Droplet reboots, or the connection to YouTube drops. Confirm that the feed resumes as intended.
- If you are recording locally on the server, confirm that the archive file is being created and continues to grow; do not assume that a live feed is also being recorded.
- Run a test for a duration appropriate to your intended schedule before leaving the channel unattended.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a platform caveat, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully.
If you need a complete public archive or a separate master recording, plan for it independently and test the workflow. One option is to schedule shorter sessions; another is a separate recording process. Verify the resulting files and archives rather than assuming a stream that stayed live was fully saved.

Cloud hosting does not change the rights needed for the material you broadcast or YouTube’s channel and content rules. Before scheduling a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video and audio, and review YouTube’s current policies for live streaming and monetization. Passing the live-stream eligibility checks does not by itself guarantee monetization approval or that a particular reused-content format will qualify.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not show a preview | Check that the channel is eligible, the correct stream URL and key are entered, the encoder is running, and the Droplet can make outbound connections. Keep the key private and regenerate it through YouTube if you believe it has been exposed. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Check outgoing bitrate, available network capacity, and whether the encoder is using the selected codec and mode settings. Compare the connection against the combined stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Encoding stalls or the Droplet is under heavy load | Determine whether the Droplet is encoding/transcoding or only relaying. Measure CPU and memory during the actual workload; if they are insufficient, test a plan suited to that measured load rather than assuming a nominal plan size is adequate. |
| The feed stops after a disconnect or reboot | Check process supervision and reconnect behavior, inspect logs, and test recovery intentionally. Do not assume a process will restart or reconnect unless you have verified it. |
| The stream is live but no complete archive appears | Check session length. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; use a separate recording plan or shorter sessions if preserving the full program matters. |
| Unexpected transfer charges appear | Compare actual outbound usage with the plan’s included allowance and team-level pool. Recalculate from bitrate and runtime, including primary and backup feeds and protocol overhead. |
What this setup does not establish
A VPS is rented compute, not a turnkey guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting. DigitalOcean’s official guidance does not give a universal minimum Droplet size for this workload, and the general documentation reviewed here does not establish an India-specific region or latency guarantee. YouTube’s encoder recommendations likewise do not guarantee that a channel, program, or monetization decision will be approved. Validate server capacity, stream health, recovery, archive behavior, and current account terms in your own setup.
