A DigitalOcean Basic Droplet currently starts at $4 per month, but that is the compute price—not necessarily the full cost of a 24/7 YouTube stream. Your total can also include outbound bandwidth overages, and the right Droplet size depends on whether it only relays an already-encoded video or must decode and transcode it. DigitalOcean’s listed Basic examples range from $4 to $48 per month; none is established as a guaranteed minimum for your particular stream.
What does a 24/7 YouTube loop cost on DigitalOcean?
For a bundled Basic Droplet, budget the listed monthly plan price for compute, then check whether your team’s pooled outbound transfer allowance covers the stream. DigitalOcean’s current pricing table, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these examples:
| Basic Droplet | vCPU | Included transfer | SSD | Listed monthly price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 512 MiB RAM | 1 | 500 GiB | 10 GiB | $4/month |
| 1 GiB RAM | 1 | 1,000 GiB | 25 GiB | $6/month |
| 2 GiB RAM | 1 | 2,000 GiB | 50 GiB | $12/month |
| 2 GiB RAM | 2 | 3,000 GiB | 60 GiB | $18/month |
| 4 GiB RAM | 2 | 4,000 GiB | 80 GiB | $24/month |
| 8 GiB RAM | 4 | 5,000 GiB | 160 GiB | $48/month |
These are plan examples, not tested encoder requirements or a complete bill estimate. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing for its current table.
Bundled Basic billing
DigitalOcean documentation, last verified August 25, 2026, describes per-second billing with a 60-second/$0.01 minimum and a 672-hour monthly cap for bundled CPU Droplets. A continuously running bundled plan therefore does not exceed its listed monthly compute price. Billing starts when you create the Droplet and ends when you destroy it. This cap does not mean all associated costs are capped.

v5 configurations are different
DigitalOcean v5 resource configurations are billed hourly and do not use the bundled plan’s monthly usage cap. Do not estimate an uncapped v5 configuration as if it were a flat monthly Basic plan: multiply its configured hourly resource price by actual hours and account for separately billed items. Billing details are in DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation.
How bandwidth changes the bill
DigitalOcean pools outbound transfer allowances across a team’s Droplets. Outbound transfer above that allowance costs $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free, and unused transfer does not roll over. Other Droplets in the team can use part of the pool, so the allowance shown for one plan is not necessarily all available to this stream. The rate and pooling rules are described in DigitalOcean’s billing documentation.

For a 24/7 stream, estimate monthly egress from the actual outgoing bitrate and planned hours, then compare it with the remaining team allowance. The available sources do not specify your stream’s bitrate, so they cannot establish a reliable transfer total or complete monthly bill.
Estimate the stream’s transfer
- Find the total bitrate your encoder will send, including audio, and express it in bits per second.
- Multiply that bitrate by the number of seconds you expect to stream. For continuous operation, use the actual number of days in the billing period rather than assuming every month is identical.
- Convert the resulting bits to bytes and then to GiB using the units used by your monitoring or billing tools. Treat the result as an estimate; overhead and traffic from other Droplets affect the team total.
- Compare estimated outbound use with the team’s remaining pooled allowance. If usage exceeds it, apply the documented $0.01/GiB overage to the excess.
YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That recommendation concerns the connection sending the stream; it is also a useful reminder to avoid planning around a link’s entire nominal capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Choose a Droplet based on the workload, not just the lowest price
The appropriate size depends on what the server must do. Relaying a file that is already encoded is a different workload from decoding it, changing resolution or bitrate, and encoding it again. The official pricing and billing sources do not establish a minimum Droplet size or benchmark for either workload, so treat the listed sizes as prices to compare—not performance recommendations.
- Relay: The server sends an already-encoded file to YouTube without changing its video encoding. Confirm that your chosen software and configuration can perform this job reliably on the selected plan.
- Transcode: Decoding and encoding video adds compute demand. Choose based on the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings, then validate the workload rather than assuming the smallest plan will suffice.
- Transfer and storage: Include outbound stream traffic and the space needed for the source video, software, and any local archive you keep. The plan’s included SSD is not the same thing as a YouTube archive.
A defensible estimate needs the specific Droplet configuration, stream bitrate, expected monthly transfer from all team Droplets, and whether the machine relays or transcodes. Without those details, a precise all-in monthly figure would be guesswork.

Set up a continuous stream—and plan for YouTube’s archive limit
A Droplet can provide the always-on server, but the encoder still needs to send the stream to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Follow its current instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prepare the video and encoding workflow. Decide whether the Droplet will relay an already-encoded file or transcode it. Verify that its disk has room for the source and that the workload fits the selected configuration.
- Configure the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, obtain the stream URL and key, then enter them in the encoder running on the Droplet. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start the loop and monitor it. Confirm the stream is live in YouTube, check that the video and audio are correct, and monitor the encoder and the connection continuously. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and checking local archive growth in its streaming tips.
- Plan archive segments deliberately. YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. If you need an archive, plan a local recording and a restart or segment strategy rather than assuming a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will become one complete replay. Details: YouTube’s archive guidance.
Rights and monetization are separate from server cost
Paying for a Droplet does not grant rights to the material in the stream. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights for live content, including music and audiovisual material. Check YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions before broadcasting.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Also, looping does not make content automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy, and reused-content review can affect a channel as a whole. Review YouTube channel monetization policies for the applicable rules.
Common cost and setup problems
- The bill is higher than the Droplet price: Check team-wide outbound transfer, not just the stream server. Above the pooled allowance, DigitalOcean charges $0.01/GiB.
- The stream stops when the process or server restarts: A Droplet is infrastructure, not a guarantee that your encoder process will restart correctly. Configure and test process recovery, then monitor that YouTube receives the stream after a restart.
- The stream is unstable despite a low transfer estimate: Check available upload bandwidth and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Confirm bitrate and encoder output rather than relying only on the server’s nominal network capacity.
- The video does not appear as a complete replay: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local archive and plan stream segments if replay preservation matters.
- The server cannot keep up: Determine whether the workflow is transcoding rather than relaying. The cited sources do not identify a guaranteed minimum size; measure the actual workload and adjust the configuration as needed.
- The stream is interrupted after an account or content issue: Verify that you have rights to all video and audio and that the content follows YouTube’s policies. Server uptime cannot resolve a platform-side restriction.
