On March 26, 2024, attorney Aaron Dyer called the federal searches of Sean “Diddy” Combs’s Los Angeles and Miami homes an “unprecedented ambush” and said Combs was innocent. Subsequent proceedings changed the case’s status: Combs was convicted on some charges and acquitted on others, and an appeal remained unresolved in the latest cited update, published April 9, 2026.
What happened at Combs’s homes
Federal agents searched Combs’s homes in Los Angeles and Miami on March 25, 2024. ABC News reported that the searches were authorized by court-issued warrants and that Homeland Security Investigations agents seized electronic devices. The searches were part of a federal sex-trafficking investigation led by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, according to ABC News and the Associated Press.
The searches were reported events. Descriptions such as “ambush,” “witch hunt,” and “excessive show of force” came from Dyer and should be understood as the defense’s characterization, not as established findings.
What Aaron Dyer said
In a statement issued March 26, 2024, Dyer criticized the searches as a “gross overuse of military-level force” and said there was “no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated.” He also said Combs “was never detained but spoke to and cooperated with authorities.” These claims were reported by ABC News and the Associated Press.

Dyer called the searches an “unprecedented ambush” and said the media presence encouraged a “premature rush to judgment.” He argued that the allegations in civil lawsuits were meritless and described the investigation as a “witch hunt.” Those phrases express the lawyer’s position; they are not conclusions reached by a court.
He also said, “There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations,” and, “Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.” These statements described the defense position in March 2024. They do not reflect the later trial verdicts.

What was known at the time
Contemporaneous reports said the investigation was ongoing and that Combs had not been detained or arrested during the March 25 searches. The Associated Press also reported that Combs and his attorneys denied allegations made in civil lawsuits. These details describe the situation reported in March 2024, not the case’s later posture.

In an April 9, 2026 report, the Associated Press said Combs had been convicted on prostitution-related charges and acquitted of other charges. A Second Circuit panel heard arguments on his appeal that day but did not issue an immediate decision. The AP reported that judges questioned whether the roughly four-year sentence was too harsh. The appeal’s outcome was unresolved in that report.

The later verdicts make an important distinction necessary: Dyer’s March 2024 declaration of innocence was an advocacy statement made before trial. It should not be presented as the current legal outcome, nor should the later convictions erase the fact that he made that statement at the time.
