The federal case has since gone to trial: a jury found Combs guilty of two prostitution-transportation counts on July 2, 2025, and he was sentenced to 50 months in prison on October 3, 2025.
Which lawyer is stepping down?
The latest motion described here is not about Combs’s federal criminal defense. On September 29, 2026, Sher Tremonte LLP moved to withdraw as counsel in the civil action Doe v. Combs, No. 1:24-cv-07778, in the Southern District of New York. Judge Jennifer L. Rochon’s October 1 order set deadlines and scheduled a virtual hearing for October 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The order says Sher Tremonte remains counsel unless and until the court grants the motion. Anthony Ricco’s earlier request concerned the criminal case
In February 2025, attorney Anthony Ricco filed a notice seeking to withdraw from Combs’s federal defense team. The filing did not explain his reasons, and court approval was required. The Associated Press reported Ricco’s statement that “under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.” His request was not expected to delay the trial. These are distinct proceedings: Ricco’s request involved the criminal defense; Sher Tremonte’s motion involves a civil lawsuit. The civil motion is not evidence that Combs’s criminal counsel has changed.

What happened to the federal indictment?
The indictment unsealed on September 17, 2024, charged Combs with three offenses: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution. An indictment states the government’s accusations; it is not a finding of guilt. The Justice Department’s announcement described alleged conduct beginning in 2008 and alleged that Combs used a business enterprise and associates in crimes including sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction. The department emphasized that the charges were accusations and that Combs was presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Read the Justice Department’s 2024 announcement.
The indictment and the government’s announcement used the term “Freak Offs” for alleged days-long sexual performances. That phrase refers to allegations in the charging materials, not a separate verdict.

What was Combs convicted of, and what was the sentence?
The case proceeded to trial. According to the Justice Department’s case summary, on July 2, 2025, a jury found Combs guilty on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution. The jury did not convict him of all three charges in the original indictment; the summary identifies the two transportation convictions.
