Short answer: there is no reliable evidence that Will Smith digitally invented the audiences at his 2025 concerts. Reporting indicates that some fans and signs in the disputed montage also appeared in Smith’s earlier posts. However, the montage itself appears to contain AI-like distortions, and it may have combined ordinary footage with AI-assisted animation of real photographs—or been made to look worse by YouTube processing. Smith or his representatives have not publicly explained the exact workflow.
What started the accusation?
Smith posted a short montage from his European tour showing large, enthusiastic crowds and close-ups of fans holding specific signs. Viewers noticed familiar generative-AI failure patterns: unnaturally smooth or warped faces, merged fingers and limbs, and lettering that changes or becomes unreadable. One sign reportedly shifted from “Lov U Fresh Prince” to a malformed version resembling “Lov U Fr6sh Crince.” Another, referring to Smith’s music helping someone survive cancer, appeared visually altered. BGR documented the controversy and the suspicious frames (BGR).
Those details justify scrutiny, but “looks AI-generated” is not the same as “the people were fabricated.” Compression, sharpening, beauty filters, frame interpolation and other conventional effects can also damage hands, faces and text.
The evidence that the fans were real
TechCrunch reported that technology blogger Andy Baio compared the montage with Smith’s earlier tour posts and found overlapping fans and signs (TechCrunch). That is important counterevidence to the claim that the crowds were generated from nothing.

It does not prove that every frame is authentic. A real photograph can be animated, retouched or composited. A genuine sign can acquire new lettering during an AI transformation. And an edited promotional montage can reorder shots so that separate moments look like one continuous scene. The evidence establishes real source material, not the complete history of the final video.
What Baio’s reconstruction suggests
Baio’s apparent theory is that Smith’s team may have used still concert photographs as inputs for photo-to-video generation, then mixed those synthetic-motion shots with normally filmed footage. This would explain why recognizable real attendees coexist with melting anatomy and unstable text.
- Earlier posts show real fans and signs.
- The later montage contains distortions associated with synthetic motion.
- Photo-to-video systems can animate an authentic still while changing hands, faces and lettering.
- AI-assisted animation is therefore plausible.
That is a reconstruction, not a confession or a published forensic report. No reviewed source identifies a model, project file, metadata trail or production employee who confirms it. The claim that Smith definitely used Veo—or any particular tool—is unsupported.

Could YouTube have made it look stranger?
There is a second, compatible explanation. TechCrunch reported that YouTube was testing machine-learning processing on selected Shorts to unblur, denoise and improve clarity. The same material reportedly looked more natural on Instagram than in the YouTube Shorts version. YouTube creator liaison Rene Ritchie said creators would be allowed to opt out after complaints.
Enhancement is not the same as generative creation. Sharpening, denoising and face processing can exaggerate halos, plastic skin and unstable edges in an already edited upload. Platform processing may have intensified artifacts without inventing the crowd. But without the original upload and a controlled comparison of codecs, settings and versions, it cannot explain every defect or rule out earlier AI assistance.
Instagram versus YouTube: what a comparison can—and cannot—show
A useful check is to align the same moment from both platforms and inspect identical faces, hands and signs. If a defect appears only on YouTube, transcoding or enhancement becomes a stronger possibility. If it is present in the source video and on Instagram, the alteration likely predates YouTube.

This is not a controlled forensic test unless the original file, upload history and processing settings are available. Screen recordings, recompression and different playback resolutions can introduce additional changes. A side-by-side comparison is evidence about presentation, not proof of who made the underlying edit.

What was technologically possible in 2025?
The suspected workflow was technically accessible. On July 23, 2025, YouTube announced Shorts tools that could turn still images into six-second videos with Veo 2, with SynthID watermarks and labels for generated creations in supported markets (YouTube Blog). Google’s Veo 3 supported image-to-video generation and prompted sound, while consumer products such as Google Photos added photo-animation features during 2025 (TechCrunch on Veo 3; Google Photos coverage).
Those announcements show what tools could do; they do not identify what Smith used. YouTube’s later Veo 3 Fast tools (September 2025) and Google’s Veo 3.1 updates (January 2026) postdate the controversy and cannot be treated as evidence of its production (TechCrunch; Google Blog).

Four claims that should not be collapsed

Other explanations remain possible
- Conventional post-production: retouching, upscaling, optical-flow interpolation, stabilization or compression can create artificial-looking motion.
- AI-assisted editing: AI may have restored, masked or interpolated frames without generating the audience.
- Platform enhancement: YouTube processing may have altered the viewer’s copy after upload.
- Promotional compositing: real shots can be rearranged or blended to exaggerate scale and continuity.
Generic online AI detectors cannot settle this question. They frequently flag recompressed or sharpened video, and a missing watermark does not prove that no AI was involved. Conversely, a watermark would show that some tool generated or processed material, not that the event or attendees were fake.

The reviewed reporting identifies no clear public production breakdown from Smith or his representatives. That means “Smith admitted it” is wrong, but so is “Smith was cleared.” Silence is not proof of either guilt or innocence.

Why “fake crowds” is the wrong shorthand
The controversy is really about provenance and disclosure. A real event can be represented through synthetic motion. A real person can appear in an AI-generated sequence without being an AI-generated person. A platform can change an uploaded file after publication. And a heavily edited montage can imply a continuous spectacle without showing one uninterrupted moment.

The more precise ethical question is whether an AI-altered or AI-animated presentation was used without making that process clear. Public evidence does not yet answer that question. It does show why viewers should preserve the original post, compare platform versions, locate earlier source images and distinguish “synthetic editing” from “fabricated event.”
Verdict
Fake crowds: unsupported by the reviewed evidence. Real source material: likely, because matching fans and signs reportedly appeared in earlier Smith posts. AI or machine-learning alteration: plausible and visually supported, with YouTube processing as an additional possibility. Intentional deception, exact tool and workflow: unverified.
