Infamous Iron Man is the key comic behind this question—but its premise is the reverse of Tony Stark becoming Doctor Doom. Victor von Doom takes up the Iron Man identity while Tony is out of the picture. Marvel’s official listing for the first issue puts it plainly: “There is a new Iron Man in town and his name is VICTOR VON DOOM.”
Did Tony Stark become Doctor Doom in Infamous Iron Man?
No. In the documented story, Tony Stark does not literally turn into Doctor Doom. Victor von Doom becomes the new Iron Man. The characters remain distinct; Doom adopts Tony’s superhero mantle rather than Tony taking on Doom’s identity.
Marvel’s listing identifies Infamous Iron Man #1 as a 2016 issue by writer Brian Michael Bendis and penciller Alex Maleev, and introduces Victor as the new Iron Man. Marvel’s issue listing gives the clearest official account of the premise.
Why does Doctor Doom become Iron Man?
Marvel’s account places Doom’s decision after Civil War II, when Tony is incapacitated. Doom decides to help fill in for him, then tries to make a place for himself among the Avengers as the Infamous Iron Man. The change is therefore about Doom attempting to take on a heroic role—not about Tony becoming his longtime rival.

How does Riri Williams challenge Doom?
Riri Williams, the young inventor known as Ironheart, objects to Doom continuing as Iron Man. She believes he is tarnishing Tony’s legacy, putting the story’s central tension in view: Doom may be wearing the armor and using the name, but that does not automatically make him worthy of what Tony represented. Marvel’s Ironheart explainer says the two eventually find common ground.

Is there more than one time Tony became Doom?
The official material supporting this topic establishes one directly relevant story, and it is Doom becoming Iron Man—not Tony becoming Doom. A fan-maintained character page mentions an inversion spell involving Doom and Scarlet Witch, but that reference does not establish a literal Tony-to-Doom transformation or provide a reliable basis for a comprehensive list. It is not enough to support the headline’s claim that this happened “every time.”
Does this explain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday?
Not on the evidence available here. The Marvel comics sources explain Doom’s turn as Iron Man in Infamous Iron Man; they do not establish how the film will portray Doctor Doom or whether it will connect him to Tony Stark. Any claim that the movie’s Doom is a Tony Stark variant—or that the film adapts this comic premise—should be treated as speculation, not a confirmed plot detail.

What should you read?
For the opening of the story, read Infamous Iron Man Vol. 1: Infamous. Marvel’s catalog lists the trade paperback as published May 31, 2017, and says it collects issues #1–6. That makes it a straightforward way to follow the first six issues of Doom’s attempt to take up the Iron Man mantle. See Marvel’s collection listing.
