The available reporting does not establish that Tom Cruise has quit Scientology, and it does not establish that the Church kept him from seeing his daughter Suri. A 2023 wave of articles speculated that he had left or become less involved, but those pieces relied on indirect observations and unnamed sourcing. Cruise has not publicly confirmed a departure in the coverage reviewed. The sworn testimony that is most often cited, from a 2013 deposition in his divorce from Katie Holmes, concerns why Holmes filed for divorce. It does not show what caused the distance between Cruise and Suri.
What the 2023 reports claimed
The departure story surfaced in August 2023. Its core evidence was absence rather than statement. One report, from MEAWW, said Cruise had reportedly not visited a Church location in the United Kingdom during an extended stay in the country. Another, from Bol News, noted that he had not publicly said he left the Church.
Neither point is evidence of resignation. A celebrity not appearing at a building is a weak signal on its own, and a silence about membership is consistent with many private arrangements. The reports did not include a direct quote from Cruise or an official statement from the Church confirming that he had left.
What the 2013 deposition actually established
Most of the claims linking Scientology to Suri trace back to testimony Cruise gave in his divorce from Holmes, which was reported by CBS News and ABC News. In that testimony, Cruise acknowledged that Holmes’s wish to protect Suri from Scientology was one of the assertions about why she filed for divorce. That is a statement about Holmes’s stated motive. It is not a finding that the Church caused the divorce.

The same deposition, as reported by E! News, covered his contact with his daughter after the split. Cruise testified that he did not see Suri for a period, discussed work and scheduling as factors, and denied abandoning her. Testimony about missed time with a child is not the same as proof of why the time was missed.
The Standard’s coverage of the same deposition reports Cruise saying that Suri was not practicing Scientology at that time, as reported by The Standard. That statement is about the past, when it was made. It says nothing definitive about what Suri believes now.

Comparing the sources behind each claim
The two strands of coverage differ sharply in what they can support. The table below separates what was said from what was inferred.
| Claim | Date | Source type | How far it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise testified that protecting Suri from Scientology was one assertion about Holmes’s reason for divorce | 2013 deposition | Sworn testimony, reported by CBS News, ABC News and The Standard | Establishes what Holmes asserted, not that the Church caused the divorce |
| Cruise did not see Suri for a period after the split and denied abandoning her | 2013 deposition | Sworn testimony, reported by CBS News and E! News | Establishes the testimony, not the cause of the gap |
| Suri was not practicing Scientology at that time | 2013 deposition | Sworn testimony, reported by The Standard | Historical only; silent on her present beliefs |
| Cruise has quit Scientology | August 2023 | Unnamed sourcing and inference from absence, reported by MEAWW and Bol News | Unconfirmed; no public statement from Cruise or the Church found |
| Scientology kept Cruise from seeing Suri | August 2023 headlines | Headline framing built on the 2013 testimony and the 2023 speculation | Causal claim not established by the sources reviewed |
What remains unknown
- Whether Cruise remains a member of Scientology today. No primary statement from him or the Church confirming a departure appears in the reporting reviewed.
- The current private relationship between Cruise and Suri. None of the coverage reviewed describes it, and the 2013 testimony cannot answer it.
- Whether any Church policy restricted contact between Cruise and his children. The sources do not establish such a policy or show that it was applied.
- The reasons for the distance between Cruise and Suri in the years after the split. The testimony offers Cruise’s account and Holmes’s stated motive; it does not settle the cause.
How to judge future reports on this topic
When a new story claims Cruise has left Scientology or that the Church blocked contact with Suri, check three things before accepting it:

- Mission: Impossible - 6 Movie Collection [Blu-ray + Digital]
- Is there a direct statement from Cruise, a court record, or an official Church communication? Anonymous sourcing and location-based inference are not confirmation.
- Is the date of the underlying evidence clear? Testimony from 2013 says nothing about 2026, and a 2023 rumor says nothing about a later decision.
- Does the article separate what a person said from what a writer concluded? A headline that moves from “he acknowledged a reason” to “the Church caused it” has crossed from evidence into speculation.
For the 2013 testimony, the most reliable starting point is the reporting from CBS News, which covers the acknowledgment directly, rather than summaries that paraphrase it.
Until a direct statement from Cruise, the Church, or a court record says otherwise, the accurate description is that reports speculated he had left Scientology, and that the testimony connected to his divorce does not establish that the Church caused the distance between him and his daughter.
