The Academy’s Board of Governors chose him, and the selection was announced on June 17, 2025. The honor is an honorary award, not a competitive Oscar, and the Academy’s stated reason centers on his commitment to his craft and to the filmmaking community, including performing his own stunts.
How the honor was announced and decided
The Academy’s Board of Governors selected the honorees for the 2025 Governors Awards, and the Academy published its announcement on June 17, 2025. Academy President Janet Yang framed the year’s event as a celebration of four legendary individuals whose careers and commitment to the filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact. Cruise was one of those four.

The selection was made by the Board, not by a competitive vote among nominees. That distinction matters for how the award should be described: it recognizes a body of work and a standing in the industry rather than a single film or performance.
What the Academy said about Cruise
The Academy’s announcement tied the honor to Cruise’s career and his commitment to craft and to the filmmaking community. It specifically noted that he performs his own stunts. That is the Academy’s own stated rationale. It describes the award’s reasoning; it is not an independent audit of every stunt in his films.

The ceremony on November 16, 2025
The 2025 Governors Awards took place on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. The Academy’s official event page labels the presentation clip “Tom Cruise Receives an Honorary Oscar Award.” Associated Press coverage published on November 17, 2025 reported his acceptance remarks, and it describes the honorary statuette as his first Oscar.
Cruise’s speech centered on film as part of who he is. He said: “Making movies is not what I do, it’s who I am.” He also said: “I will always do everything I can to help this art form.” Both lines are quoted from AP’s report of the ceremony.

Honorary versus competitive: how Cruise’s record is structured
Cruise has never won a competitive Academy Award, so the honorary statuette is his first Oscar but not a competitive win. The Academy’s own account lists four competitive nominations across three acting-related films and one Best Picture nomination. The table below separates them.
| Film | Academy recognition | Ceremony | Cruise’s role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Born on the Fourth of July | Best Actor nomination | 62nd Academy Awards (1990) | Actor |
| Jerry Maguire | Best Actor nomination | 69th Academy Awards (1997) | Actor |
| Magnolia | Best Supporting Actor nomination | 73rd Academy Awards (2000) | Actor |
| Top Gun: Maverick | Best Picture nomination | 96th Academy Awards (2024) | Producer |
The four competitive nominations, as counted by the Academy’s 2025 announcement and AP’s report, are the only competitive Academy recognition in the record. None of them was a win.

The other 2025 honorees
Choreographer, actor, and director Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas also received Academy Honorary Awards at the same event. Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, a separate category recognizing humanitarian work rather than film craft. Keeping these categories apart avoids the common error of treating all Academy honors at one ceremony as the same kind of recognition.

What the honor does and does not establish
The honorary award confirms the Academy’s view that Cruise’s commitment to filmmaking warrants recognition beyond his nominated work. It does not alter his competitive record, and it should not be described as a competitive Oscar. For readers covering awards history or the craft of filmmaking, the most accurate framing is that the Academy honored a career built on performing much of his own action work, and the actor placed that work at the center of his remarks.
