Why ICE was part of the Super Bowl conversation
The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl LX halftime performer. The game was scheduled for February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The announcement drew criticism from some political figures, and comments from administration officials brought the possibility of ICE at the event into public discussion.

Those remarks were statements by individual officials, not evidence that an operation had been ordered. The distinction matters: the public comments, the White House’s stated understanding at the time and the NFL’s later description of its security plans came from different people and addressed different things.

October 2: Corey Lewandowski said ICE would be present
On October 2, DHS adviser Corey Lewandowski said ICE would be at the Super Bowl. Euronews quoted him saying: “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you and apprehend you and put you in a detention facility and deport you.” He also criticized the choice of Bad Bunny. Lewandowski’s declaration was a public statement; it did not, by itself, establish that an operational deployment had been authorized.

October 3: Karoline Leavitt said she knew of no tangible plan
At a White House briefing the next day, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to preview President Donald Trump’s view of the performer. Asked specifically whether ICE would be at the game, she said: “As far as ICE being at the Super Bowl, as far as I’m aware, there’s no tangible plan for that in store right now.” Her answer described what she understood at that time, rather than confirming a deployment.
October 22: Roger Goodell said the NFL was not reconsidering Bad Bunny
On October 22, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was not reconsidering Bad Bunny as halftime headliner. The Associated Press reported that Goodell called the choice carefully considered and defended it by pointing to the performer’s popularity. The NFL’s position on the selection did not resolve the separate question of federal event security.

What the NFL said about security in February 2026
On February 3, NFL security chief Cathy Lanier said no ICE or immigration-enforcement operations were planned around the game or its related events, and that ICE was not among the agencies deployed with the NFL. EL PAÍS reported that DHS and other federal agencies would still participate in event security.
Lanier’s account was specifically about planned operations around the event and the agencies deployed with the league. It does not establish what every federal agency did outside those arrangements. The available statements do not establish that an ICE operation took place at the game.

So, was ICE going to be at the Super Bowl?
The answer depends on which point in the timeline the question means. Lewandowski said on October 2 that ICE would be present; Leavitt said on October 3 that, as far as she knew, there was no tangible plan; and Lanier said on February 3 that ICE was not part of the NFL’s security deployment and that no immigration operations were planned around the event. These statements should not be collapsed into either proof that ICE was sent or proof about all federal activity beyond the NFL’s arrangements.
