No. Southern River Band did not book a support slot with Coldplay. Frontman Callum Kramer said yes during a prank call staged by KIIS presenters Will and Woody, who revealed that the supposed offer was fake. The band’s earlier objection was to a competition for the Perth support slot—not necessarily to playing with Coldplay.
What happened on the prank call?
On 23 November 2023, KIIS Network presenters Will and Woody called Southern River Band frontman Callum Kramer. Woody posed as “Tom Martin from Live Nation” and asked whether the band could warm up for Coldplay on a supposed return to Australia the following year. Kramer replied, “Far out. I reckon we’d be able to make that happen for sure,” adding that he would need to speak with the band’s booking agent. The hosts then revealed the deception, according to PerthNow’s report.
Because the caller was pretending to represent Live Nation, this was not a genuine offer or booking. Kramer’s apparent agreement was part of the prank.
What was the earlier Coldplay “snub”?
In August 2023, Coldplay invited local Western Australian acts to compete for the chance to open both of the band’s Perth shows at Optus Stadium. PerthNow reported that the competition offered a $15,000 prize and the possibility of playing to a potential audience of 120,000 people across two nights. Those are figures reported for the competition, not confirmation of the winning act’s payment or the shows’ actual attendance.

Southern River Band declined to enter. After the prank reveal, Kramer said, “I’m just not entering a goddamn competition.” He objected to a process in which acts would rally support and music-industry experts would choose the winner. His reported explanation was about how the opening act would be selected—not a blanket refusal to perform alongside Coldplay.
Did the band change its mind?
The word “backflip” in the November headline plays on Kramer accepting the fake invitation. It does not describe a reversal leading to a real Coldplay booking. The distinction is between refusing to take part in the Perth competition and being willing, in principle, to support Coldplay. A 2025 PerthNow retrospective likewise describes the band as rejecting the competition rather than the chance to tour with Coldplay.
