No: the available dated worldwide comparisons show Mufasa: The Lion King ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic did hold the larger cumulative U.S. domestic total in one January 2025 snapshot, but that is different from leading the worldwide box office.
What the worldwide comparisons show
On December 29, 2024, Variety reported worldwide grosses of $328 million for Mufasa and $211.5 million for Sonic 3. In its January 19, 2025 issue, ScreenDollars put the films at $588.0 million and $420.0 million, respectively, after 31 days. Both films opened on December 20, 2024, according to ScreenDollars’ comparison.

These dated snapshots do not show Sonic passing Mufasa worldwide. They are contemporaneous estimates, not the films’ final lifetime totals, and should not be mixed with domestic-only figures or weekend rankings.

Why Sonic was described as leading
The claim can be confused with a domestic running-total comparison. In its January 5, 2025 report, the Associated Press said Sonic 3 had accumulated an estimated $187.5 million in North America, compared with $169.2 million for Mufasa. On that measure, Sonic was ahead domestically.

But Mufasa won that particular weekend. AP reported estimated weekend grosses of $23.8 million for Mufasa and $21.2 million for Sonic 3. A weekend ranking measures ticket sales during a defined period; a cumulative total adds up a film’s reported earnings to that point. Neither domestic figure establishes a worldwide lead. The AP report distinguishes those two comparisons.

Studio-reported milestones
Paramount said on January 5, 2025, that Sonic 3 had earned more than $312 million worldwide, including more than $187 million domestically and over $100 million internationally. This was the studio’s dated point-in-time report, not a claim that the film led Mufasa. Paramount’s announcement gives those figures.

SEGA said the film’s first three U.S. days grossed $60.1 million and announced on January 22, 2025, that it had reached $425 million worldwide. In the same announcement, SEGA put Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at $405 million worldwide. These are studio-reported milestones. SEGA’s announcement provides the figures.
Later all-release listing
Box Office Mojo’s all-release listing gives Sonic the Hedgehog 3 a worldwide total of $492,162,604: $236,115,100 domestic and $256,047,504 international. The listing does not show when that total was last revised, so it is useful as a later database figure but cannot by itself establish the exact date Sonic reached that amount or when it stood relative to Mufasa. Box Office Mojo’s title page lists the breakdown.

How to read the box-office claim accurately
- Worldwide cumulative gross: the dated comparisons above put Mufasa ahead in the reported snapshots.
- Domestic cumulative gross: AP’s January 5 snapshot put Sonic ahead in North America.
- Weekend ranking: Mufasa led the North American weekend reported by AP on January 5.
- Different source dates and methods: Studio announcements, contemporaneous reporting, and later database listings are not interchangeable totals. Keep each figure attached to its source, date, territory, and measurement period.
