Its performances and songs give the film much of its appeal; its insistence on decorum also keeps its heroine’s inner life and struggles at a distance. The film is inspired by singer Raj Begum’s life, but tells her story through a dramatized character and narrative.
What is Songs of Paradise about?
Directed by Danish Renzu and written by Renzu with Niranjan Iyengar and Sunayana Kachroo, the film is set in Srinagar in 1954. As Nandini Ramnath recounts in her Scroll review, young Zeba Akhtar wins a radio singing competition and faces family expectations as she considers becoming the first woman to sing on Radio Kashmir. The story also follows music researcher Rumi as she seeks out the older Zeba.

Saba Azad plays young Zeba and Soni Razdan plays her older counterpart. Amazon’s release announcement describes the film as a tribute to Kashmir’s first female playback singer, Raj Begum, and says it is based on her life. That connection is the historical inspiration, not a guarantee that Zeba, Rumi, or every event in the film is a documentary record. Amazon also lists Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, Shishir Sharma, and Lillete Dubey in the cast.
Is it worth watching?
Ramnath calls the film an “engaging portrait,” praising its restrained account of Zeba’s progress, Azad’s performance, Razdan’s sense of generational continuity, and the songs. The music and the setting are central pleasures: the film presents a woman’s entry into a public cultural space through a story shaped by Kashmiri musical heritage rather than by a fast-moving rise-to-fame plot.

- Greatest Hits is a 1988 compilation album by British-American band Fleetwood Mac. It covers the period of the band's greatest commercial success, from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. The track listing for the US release differs slightly from that of other territories. It includes the 1975 track "Over My Head" but omits the 1987 track "Seven Wonders."
The restraint is also the film’s main limitation. Ramnath asks, “Has a personal revolution ever been more demure?” Zeba is expected to remain proper, a choice that can soften the force of her ambition. The film offers little access to the working-class trailblazer’s inner life beyond music, and its nostalgic atmosphere can make her hardships seem less severe. It is a better fit for viewers who value performance, song, and cultural texture than for those seeking a searching psychological portrait or a sharply dramatic account of resistance.
What do other critics say?
Critics represented on Rotten Tomatoes’ listing did not all respond alike. The listing includes Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who rated it 2/5 and found its dramatic beats familiar, as well as Devesh Sharma of Filmfare and Abhishek Srivastava of The Times of India, both rated 3.5/5; their excerpts highlight nostalgia, music, and restrained storytelling. These are individual judgments, not a single critical verdict.

- Prince designed "Purple Rain" as the project that would make him a superstar, and surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, "Purple Rain" finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop Prince hasn't abandoned funk. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpo
