Yes. Sissy Spacek sang the songs herself as Loretta Lynn in the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter; her vocals were not dubbed by a substitute singer. Director Michael Apted wanted the songs performed live to give the concert scenes a realistic feel, though that does not establish that every vocal in the film was recorded live on set.
How Spacek prepared to sing as Loretta Lynn
Spacek worked to capture more than Lynn’s notes. Turner Classic Movies’ production history says she spent time with Lynn on and off for a year, including touring with her and staying at her home. That preparation helped Spacek study Lynn’s speech and singing style.
In a 2012 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Spacek described the challenge of learning Lynn’s distinctive breath and rhythm: “there’s something she does with her breath that’s just – and her accent is just unique. And once I captured her rhythm, the hardest part of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for me was giving it all up.” Read the interview at NPR.
Who worked on the film’s songs?
Owen Bradley, who had produced records for Lynn and other country artists, supervised the film’s songs and produced its soundtrack album, according to Turner Classic Movies’ production history. That production credit does not establish whether the soundtrack is currently available in a particular format.
