Possibly—but it is not established that a typo made the entire 1964 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special public domain. Its opening notice is reported to read “MCLXIV” (1164), not “MCMLXIV” (1964). That apparent error raises a copyright question; the available sources do not establish a definitive court ruling or official determination resolving it.
What was the typo?
The special first aired on NBC on December 6, 1964. Its opening copyright notice is widely reported as “MCLXIV.” In Roman numerals, that is 1164; “MCMLXIV” is 1964. The discrepancy is the basis for the claim that the notice was defective and that the special may therefore have lost copyright protection. The Television Academy’s overview reports the first-air date and notice text, but it is not a legal determination.

Why could a wrong notice matter?
The relevant federal regulation covers copyrights originally secured from January 1, 1964, through December 31, 1977. It says a published work was copyrighted for purposes of the regulation when published with a “proper copyright notice.” It also explains that renewal registration for works from this period is optional, not a requirement for the renewal term. See the U.S. Copyright Office regulation, 37 CFR § 202.17.
That rule sets out the general framework; it does not say whether “MCLXIV” made this particular notice improper or what legal consequences follow. A specialist discussion by Plagiarism Today treats the error as potentially consequential while noting complications involving other material in the special.

Has a court ruled that the special is public domain?
The sources available here do not establish a court ruling or an official Copyright Office determination applying the notice rule to this special. So the careful answer is that the typo supports a public-domain argument, not that it conclusively freed the whole program. The regulation alone cannot settle the question.
Does that mean you can reuse clips, music, or the story?
No blanket permission follows from the notice argument. The special’s audiovisual content, the earlier Rudolph story, Johnny Marks’s song, and other music can have distinct rights histories. A claim about the special’s opening notice does not resolve the rights in every element someone might want to reuse; the specialist discussion addresses those complications as well. Plagiarism Today’s analysis is a starting point, not a substitute for determining rights in the specific material.

If you are considering uploading, distributing, screening, sampling, or adapting any part of the special, do not rely on the typo claim as assurance that the use is permitted. A qualified copyright lawyer should review the particular material and intended use. The Copyright Office’s circulars index points to official guidance on copyright notice and renewal, but does not resolve the special-specific question.

DVD and Blu-ray editions of the special have been released, including a 50th-anniversary edition. That establishes a physical home-video route historically, not current retailer stock or streaming availability. A retail copy is for viewing; buying one does not grant rights to reuse its contents. The TV special’s release-history page lists physical editions.
