Ramirez played orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres from 2006. On May 19, 2016, ABC News reported that they would not return for the next season after ten years on the show. Ramirez called the departure a break, saying, “I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy & ABC but for now I’m taking some welcome time off.” They also said, “Shonda’s been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations!” ABC News, May 19, 2016.

Rhimes responded warmly, saying she could not be happier or prouder of Callie’s journey, that she would miss the character, and that Ramirez would “always have a home at Shondaland.” That is public evidence of an affirming professional tone at the time, not proof of the two people’s private relationship today. Did the departure create bad blood?
The available public comments do not establish a feud or a falling-out. Rhimes said she learned of Ramirez’s decision roughly three days before the departure announcement, after the season finale had already been filmed. She explained that her original plan for Callie was different, but the character’s move to New York gave the story a workable exit. Has Ramirez said they would return?
Yes, Ramirez has expressed openness to returning, while making clear that it would depend on the circumstances. In a Glamour interview, they answered “Absolutely” when asked whether they would consider it, then qualified that with: “If the stars align in a way that makes it make sense.” Ramirez also said they love their Grey’s Anatomy family and would be curious to see what Callie is doing. What did the show say about Callie’s absence in 2024?
When Jessica Capshaw returned as Arizona Robbins in 2024, showrunner Meg Marinis explained that the story was centered on Arizona and her specialty, so Callie’s absence made sense for that particular storyline. Marinis also said the show has “an open-door policy here” for former cast members and wants past characters to interact with newer ones, while noting that actors’ careers and schedules can affect whether a return happens.
